I don't disagree with you that Mozilla are not exactly on the ball, all I'm saying is that Brave comparing their privacy hardened fork of Chrome with a non privacy hardened mainline browser is, at best, disingenuous.

The fact she is a brown-noser is exactly why he will pick her. He's not interested in ideas or other strong voices. What he wants is to be surrounded by people who will shower him in adulation, tell him he's right and take the fall for him when it goes wrong.

Is your British half about 500 years old?

[-] leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 9 months ago

Climate change is not something any one country can mitigate. It's going to take all of us - the world.

Grant Shapps, the guy who got caught editing his own Wikipedia entry? That guy? They guy who repeatedly denied having a second job whilst a minister but it turned out he did, under an alias, touting a get rich quick scam? The guy who in 2018 said he voted Remain but then last year said he'd voted Leave? That Grant Shapps?

Until a reliable, independent news agency verifies it, any claim from either side should be viewed as misleading. It's also worth noting that it's not just Hamas denying this, it's also the facility itself. Here's part of a report from one of the BBC correspondents in Gaza:

"Israel has accused Hamas of having a command and control centre underneath Shifa - which the group denies.

I have been to the hospital hundreds of time - I was born there, my son was born there, in the last two months of my mum's life, she was inside the kidney dialysis centre and I used to visit her every day.

It is very hard to verify what is underneath. With my eyes, I haven't seen any military capability inside the hospital buildings."

~~Lastly, consider the fact that this hospital is in one of the places the IDF instructed Palestinians to flee to . Are we now saying that the IDF were purposefully trying to place Palestinians in danger by telling them to go to a location where they knew Hamas operated from?~~

Source, time logged 08:14

EDIT: I was referring to the wrong hospital - see my comment below for details.

Never really understood the thought process "If I move to a different place, it'll definitely be magically free of arseholes and people I disagree with." It's just not reflective of reality - wherever you go, there'll be arseholes. Just build your Subscribed feed, dip into All occasionally to se what else is out there, find an instance that takes moderation seriously and aren't actual fascists and block the strays that occasionally make it through.

And OOP is right to say Lemmy has backend issues. The dev team of 2 people is too small and they really need to make safety a massive priority ASAP. Being able to block instances as a user is a big step forward (planned in the next major release I believe) but both mod and admin tools need to be much better and they need to do a lot more to tackle CSAM hits. I hope they're taking note of the various projects @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com has begun to tackle these issues.

In terms of the size of the Lemmyverse, I don't really give a shit about that. What I care about is quality rather than quantity and it stands to reason that as quality continues to improve (as I believe it is) then quantity will follow in its wake.

OOP seems to forget that Lemmy only got as big as it is right now about 4 months ago - of course there's a lack of niche communities and of course there's a lack of tools. Poor old Ernst developing KBin got hit with tens of thousands of users for software that wasn't even out of Alpha.

The best things we can do as users is create good content, encourage discussion etc even when it feels like we're talking into the void. Because sooner or later, if the content is good, people will engage. We're not at that tipping point yet but it'll come if we put the effort in.

If it matters to anyone, this is not an open source app.

If you're a Mullvad customer then they already know your IP and from that they could identify you pretty easily. But that's true of all VPN providers, but they claim they don't log and I seem to recall them saying they don't keep a record of scratch off card numbers (why would they?). Either way you have to trust them and based on the fact they're totally open I do.

If we look at how things went for Mastodon during the various twitter exodus waves, it's a very similar pattern - huge increase followed by tail off, then another wave of increase followed by another tail off etc. I suspect the same thing will happen with Lemmy/Reddit. We all know reddit are going to continue to do stupid things prior to their IPO so it's likely there'll be more waves of influx followed by tail offs.

This is actually good as it's organic growth/loss. I can't think of an example where a big push by a company to get more users has resulted in a 'better' community, just a larger one. Organic growth/loss is much more likely to result in a better community as oppose to just a 'popular' one. Or, to put it another way, lets aim for quality not quantity.

Now that my instance has defeded from Hexbear I don't see much outright tankie stuff anymore and on the very rare occasions I do come across it, I just block the user. That said, I have noticed a growing trend of people calling anything slightly to the political left of Joe Biden either socialist, communist or tankie as though those terms were interchangeable, which they're not. Either way, if it bothers you, either ignore it, block the user, block the community or move your account to an instance that is defeded from the instances you are upset by.

Let's also not forget Lemmy is not mature software and has only become as heavily used as it is now about 3 months ago. There's a lot of features missing, particularly for admin and mod users, so we can either be patient and do what we can right now, fork Lemmy, create unofficial patches or not use it.

I do feel like we've become so used to highly polished, corporate solutions that do everything that we've lost our ability to be patient. For me, its vastly preferable to be somewhere where I'm not tracked, fingerprinted, advertised to and have my data sold but at the same time put up with a few idiosyncrasy's of the software than the alternative.
