I don't use Google anymore except for Google maps in my car. :) I guess they can spy on where I'm driving. But no search history.

The guy actually never had a good personality even. They had to train him for TV evening shows to even make it work...

Yup try it and set as default in the browser. You will start to see a lot of sites that never showed up in google also. They have these "listacles" in search results where they group relevant sites into a small list, which makes it super simple to go to them for results.

If you want a sample search, try "best tv shows 2023" or something like that.

I was really surprised by this too but yeah, people want to be on the same largest instance. I guess it's a community feeling by doing that. Or at least a feeling of safety, since it's unlikely the instance shuts down.

Yeah I've had that experience too. But sometimes I write a lot of hackish code to get it to work, and then after spend time rewriting it so it's easy to understand. But it depends on mood. Sometimes I don't change it because it's complicated and it would be too much thinking required to make it better. :)

Programmers are often lazy by nature...

Yeah I get that but any big tech company can just buy the entire fediverse if they want to. They can offer instance owners money to sell their instance. They can put Lemmy developers on the payroll with 500k salaries, or replace them. They can add things like allowing people to make money by posting stuff. Suddenly we have influencers, and while they may not appeal to you, they will appeal to the millions of people who like them on Instagram.

I may not be right about the details but I'm just painting a picture here. You are letting your dreams about a better world totally cloud your judgment here. Corporations can take this place over easily and they will be really interested in that if the active user count becomes big.

People say "then we just move to another platform". Yeah, like the one we have now? And try to get it big? So we can end up again having to move away from it...

The only way to win is to stay smallish and under the radar. Be a fringe interest for a couple of million active users.

I think we are just more into tech, and that's why we are here now. Because we are into tech, we care about what happens here and despise the behavior of reddit.

We are probably not smarter than other people, we just care more because of our interests.

Also a lot of us remember growing up on a internet without ads and corporations, and miss that experience.

Yeah I refuse to use their app and I want nothing to do with them. So while they had some nice subreddits, I will learn to live without them.

It's really cool we have so many clients, and more are on the way. :)

[-] mrmanager@lemmy.today 7 points 1 year ago

That's why he is cranky! Now it all makes sense...

Nice society we live in. All those sci fi movies was just giving ideas for the people who wants everyone to be under their boot.
