Oh shit, uneasy feelings for managers... :)

Clearly a national emergency.

Just another reason to not have a YouTube account. If you use Newpipe, you can subscribe to feeds anyway without any YouTube account.

What are the plans around admin tools?

Instance owners currently gets notified when someone has reported a user for spamming or trolling, but frequently it's a user that is not on his instance, so he can't do anything about it. Wouldn't it be better if instance owners got notified only when they can take actual action (like the user being registered on their instance)?

About 5 years too late but appriciated still.

People just don't listen or care. They click on chrome because it's recommended by their daddy Google.

What you do?

You start getting into Linux, buy open source t shirts, grow a beard, listen to Stallman talks, and stop interacting with normies ever again. Only communicate through text travelling over open source technologies.

Make sure you spend enough hours in front of a keyboard to get a very pale skin color, reddish eyes and a rounded spine and neck. Pull down curtains so you see your screen better and avoid sunlight.

Drink lots of soda while sitting completely still so you gain fat and lose muscles.

I use Arch btw.

And we saw this was going to happen at least 5 years ago. But since the majority don't care, we get what we deserve I guess.

Let's just hope this doesn't go through.

There is a huge difference between mozilla and google. That's quite obvious to most. The ceo raising his salary is a problem for you, and you prefer Google, where they have enormous salaries and incomes? It's one of the richest companies in the world.

Firefox doesn't have inferior UX at all. It has more functions and features than chrome. It also has very good default privacy and the plugin system is amazing.

And it just became faster than chrome as well.

That's like the coolest thing. I hope you feel super welcome here.

It's just so damn good.

It's really nice to see this desktop come along. A third proper Linux desktop environment like Plasma and Gnome written in Rust. From system76.

Just loving this project. I think it will become real popular real quick when it ships with PopOS.

Lemmy software updated to latest version that has some important security fixes.

Fediverse privacy nightmare? (blog.bloonface.com)

I think they are leaving out something quite important in this blog post - nobody is using their real names here.

It's very different from Meta or Google or whatever big tech company people have accounts on, where they know your real name and many more details, such as phone number and address.

I don't see the privacy danger in someone sweeping up what we are talking about here, since we are pseudo anonymous. Am I missing something?

Whats the value of random aliases discussing something and why is that a privacy issue?

Meta's Threads experience seems horrible (internettalk.substack.com)

I haven't used threads and I never will, but it's nice to see that it's not a great user experience even for people who are used to meta.

I think you should walk together and just talk. The traditional idea of sitting down at a table facing eachother can create a lot of pressure when conversation topics temporarily dies out. If you walk, there are things to observe and talk about all the time. :)

I updated the instance to Lemmy version 0.18.1 that was released just an hour ago.

Major changes from patch notes:

  • Major improvements to performance, specifically optimizations of database queries.
  • Fix for another cross-site scripting vulnerability.
  • Captchas are supported again.

I've tried them all and they are all quite good. I think currently Liftoff is the best, followed closely by Jerboa and Connect.

You may have to use f-droid to install them if you can't find them in Play Store. :)

I host my own because it's cheap, less than 10 dollars per month, and I wanted to contribute to the growth of the Lemmy community.

Also turns out that it's another benefit to this: I don't have to get involved in the entire political debate of who federated with who. I just subscribe to communities I want anywhere.

Don't want any lizard cage fighting sociopath in my Lemmy thanks.

Introductions (lemmy.today)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by mrmanager@lemmy.today to c/general@lemmy.today

There are a few users joining now every day, and I was thinking it would be nice with some short introductions, if you want to. :)

I for one has grown really tired of what social media is today, and I wanted to try out alternatives where people can actually relax and communicate without being tracked and subjected to horrible ads. Since im a technical guy who currently works in devops, I figured I would start https://lemmy.today, and try to be of service to the community in that way.

Im so tired of internet ads, and I have installed https://pi-hole.net as a network ad blocker at home. So this means my entire family benefits also (everyone on the wifi). Its super interesting to watch how windows and mac machines are constantly calling home, reporting activity, even when the devices are idle. I recommend you guys to do the same if you have the know-how.

Im a long time linux user, and even though it has its frustrations sometimes, specially with screen sharing, its worth it for me to just feel like I own my computer and whats running on it.

So I guess thats a little bit about me. I would love to hear from you guys if you feel confident making a post and share who you are and why you got interested in Lemmy. And also why you are looking for alternatives to reddit. :)

Thank you!

Due to current migration from reddit and lots of signups on Lemmy instances, you may get temporary errors when trying to subscribe to their communities.

Lemmy.ml also currently have their homepage down and you get this message trying to visit it:

404: FetchError: invalid json response body at http://lemmy:8536/api/v3/site? reason: Unexpected token 'T', "Timeout oc"... is not valid JSON

So try to subscribe to communities from other instances if you get errors trying to subscribe to theirs, and then try again later.

Just wanted to write this so new users dont get confused by the errors. They are not related to this instance.

You may have noticed we dont have many local communities here. Its partly because we are quite new, and partly because there are so many good communities on other instances.

You are free to create communities on this instance, but since we are small right now, they wont have a lot of discussions in the beginning.

The best part about Lemmy being federated is that you can subscribe to any community on any other instance and take part in discussions right from this instance, without actually having an account on that instance.

How to subscribe to communities on other instances

Easiest way right now is to open a new tab in your browser, go to https://lemmyverse.net/communities and do this:

  • Click on the link under each community you want to join (like !technology@beehaw.org) to copy it into your clipboard.

  • Click the search button in the upper right area here on https://lemmy.today

  • Paste the link into the search box and click Search.

It may say "No results" but wait for like at least 5 seconds. It sometimes takes time for it to show up.

Sometimes you get a lot of results because its mentioned in discussions that will also generate search hits. The link you are looking for looks like this, as an example:

Technology@lemmy.ml - 1 subscriber

  • Click on the link and in the Sidebar to the right, there is a Subscribe button. Hit that and now you are subscribed. Now you will start seeing new content filling your feed here on https://lemmy.today.

If you have any questions, just ask!

If you decided to join this instance, I just wanted to say welcome and hope you have a good time!

There are some basic rules in place but it basically boils down to being a nice person. This instance is located in the US because I figured it would be a fast location for most people.

We dont have many local communities but feel free to create new ones if you want. Otherwise you can just subscribe to any community from any instance from here as well. There is another post here how to do that.

Enjoy and have a good time!

submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by mrmanager@lemmy.today to c/jerboa@lemmy.ml

The perfect social media android experience, using Jerboa for ad free, federated, social media and Newpipe for ad free YouTube with a beautiful userface.

Install newpipe with f-droid.

Remember to go into Apps and click on Newpipe and change default urls so Android opens all the YouTube urls with Newpipe.

After that, it's heaven on mobile.
