Echoing what others have mentioned, commit messages need to document why something was changed and put it into the context of the project. You should do this even for private projects, just so 1) you build good habits and 2) if you let the project rest for a while you don't need to figure put everything from the start again.

I mean, you're forgetting the additional power costs that you'll have to pay for running your own hardware, plus maybe ISP fees if you want to upgrade for better upload speeds.

Why would any scientist worth their salt be mad about that? Science is constantly trying to find new things that may disprove old things, that's basically half of the point (the other half is the discoveries made along the way).

There are only very few things out there where scientists are sure they will never change and for all of those we know for a fact that they cannot change, like the fundamental axioms of math.

That's pretty much a question of culture and the field.

In Germany, it's pretty much impossible to get into some jobs without a degree. In others, you get a higher salary for having a degree, to the point where some companies will not take you for a position because your degree makes you too expensive. In the public sector, your highest degree determines your salary scale (and most importantly where it caps out).

Not saying the system is good like that, but it is currently that way, so at the very least here, degree often corresponds to higher salary.

That depends, in Germany, the federal republic part is fairly regularly used in news when talking about international affairs, basically using it so they don't have to say Germany as often.

Generally speaking, you never want to use a low port (<1024) for anything other than the service assigned to it, because it causes all kinds of headache. Both on your side and on the other side. As for high ports, pick whichever one you prefer. They don't have any binding to a given service, though there are some conventions.

The thing that shows people you're running a VPN is not the port but the protocol header, so changing the port is pretty much useless if you want your ISP to not know you're running a VPN for some reason.

I agree, but the issue I see is that if we don't de-federate them, they could aggregate and sell our data, which is something many people explicitly switched off of Meta services for.

That, and Meta has the infrastructure/paid developers to develop features/respond to issues much faster, which might cause more casual users to migrate over because they see things they desire.

Another worry I've seen around is that if the Meta instance is not blocked/defederated, it could aggregate all that data and sell it, which is something lots of people explicitly do not want.
