Can we stop blaming platforms for what their users post on them?

It's not TikTok, Telegram, Twitter, Mastodon, Lemmy spreading misinformation (or correct information for that matter), it is their users. People used to understand this, somehow they don't anymore.

If the Australian government is going to regulate ex-Twitter, it's going to be writing a law that applies to all websites (or maybe: all websites above a certain size), including here on the fediverse; not just to ex-Twitter.

Even if you agree with that argument (which I don't), that was written about ideologies like fascism, Nazism, Stalinism, which were (when they were relevant) actually very suppressive of free speech when they were in power, more so than current left-leaning authoritarians who are defending the blocking of ex-Twitter in Brazil or (worse) saying that other countries should do similar things.

quite frankly because I have hardly ever seen governments regulating technology having good results; we should mostly be allowed to experiment with technology without governments telling us how to do it, this is how we make human progress

The guy who wrote https://www.eff.org/cyberspace-independence didn't know about large language models yet but his thoughts apply to them too tbh.

Yeah well, not too illogical a position considering the fall of communism between those decades. This is a trait of Russia, not of conservatives.

This isn't too far off. In 2016 many people I read thought a Trump presidency would literally be the end of US democracy, possibly the end of the world because he would start a nuclear war. Those are not things that ended up happening, so I do not predict that they will happen if Trump wins this year either.

Have you ever read I Can Tolerate Anything Except The Outgroup? If not, I suggest that you do.

So are they going to release non-AGPL (probably MPL) implementations of fediverse software? That would be real progress.

Wikipedia is by its own standards a propaganda organ for the status quo (a mainstream encyclopedia that summarizes mainstream science, history and journalism).

I only observed it, didn't participate in it; but if one side of a dispute is young freedom-loving technology-savvy nerds from the Internet (i.e. people like me) and the other authoritarian feminists with beliefs I thought didn't exist anymore, and the media portrays the latter as victims and the former as villains, then something is terribly wrong. Some stupidity and bad behavior definitely came from both sides of that, but the media did not get it right, probably because there are relatively few nerds in the media.

Vim is a great input method for other text editors like intellij or vscodium. The actual text editor? Nah.
