holy fuck how are you like this

Can you prove that ChatGPT is not conscious? No.

holy fuck shut up

given how none of their rant applied to your OP, I’m fairly certain they didn’t read it and were just going off the title. see also how fast they went from a false critique of LLMs (“of course they’re not people”) to an appeal to an imaginary middle ground (“both proponents and critics of LLMs anthropomorphize them/think they’re sci-fi marvels”, a ridiculous claim to apply to your OP or to serious LLM skepticism in general) to smuggling in hype (“…but of course LLMs are revolutionary and we don’t know what they’re capable of”)

in short, don’t bother with this shithead, they’re just marketing OpenAI products to a particularly hostile crowd

fuck, I’m David’s fault too. do we take turns dating Grimes or is this the worst polycule ever formed

if my real-life friends were cooler, I’d have already arranged a watch party, drinking game, and post-sentencing celebratory cocktails

fuck it, we’re doing cocktails

The SBF

  • fill a highball glass to 2/3rds with ice and apple cider
  • float a shot of Skrewball peanut butter whiskey on top
  • to commemorate SBF’s long history of bad decisions, garnish with a serving of your choice of citrus-flavored THC drinkable
  • don’t actually do the above step you will throw up in front of your disappointed family

from the orange site thread:

Neural networks are not new, and they're just mathematical systems. LLMs don't think. At all. They're basically glorified autocorrect. What they're good for is generating a lot of natural-sounding text that fools people into thinking there's more going on than there really is.

Obvious question: can Prolog do reasoning?

If your definition of reasoning excludes Prolog, then... I'm not sure what to say!

this is a very specific sneer, but it’s a fucking head trip when you’ve got in-depth knowledge of whichever obscure shit the orange site’s fetishizing at the moment. I like Prolog a lot, and I know it pretty well. it’s intentionally very far from a generalized reasoning engine. in fact, the core inference algorithm and declarative subset of Prolog (aka Datalog) is equivalent to tuple relational calculus; that is, it’s no more expressive than a boring SQL database or an ECS game engine. Prolog itself doesn’t even have the solving power of something like a proof assistant (much less doing anything like thinking); it’s much closer to a dependent type system (which is why a few compilers implement Datalog solvers for type checking).

in short, it’s fucking wild to see the same breathless shit from the 80s AI boom about Prolog somehow being an AI language with a bunch of emphasis on the AI, as if it were a fucking thinking program (instead of a cozy language that elegantly combines elements of a database with a simple but useful logic solver) revived and thoughtlessly applied simultaneously to both Prolog and GPT, without any pause to maybe think about how fucking stupid that is

Well, if you think that's a dumb scenario, by all means go back to worrying about the utter extinction of humanity!

no thanks? like, I’m seriously having trouble understanding what yud’s even going for here. “if you think this utter bullshit I made up on the spot is stupid, please return to the older bullshit I’ve been feeding you?”

That makes it significantly less threatening

I mean, to you and me, yes, but there's lakes and seas of people in the world who think that superintelligences are only allowed to attack them in small, survivable ways that they understand.

the problem isn’t that I’ve said something that doesn’t even work on a surface level, it’s that people aren’t impressed when I ramble about extraordinarily unlikely nonsense anymore

is yud ok? I feel like this is incoherent and shallow even by his standards

I knew this thread would attract the fucking weirdos. drink!

posting a screenshot to preserve the cringe in its most potent form:

yeah BasedBeffJezos is just an ironic fascist persona that has nothing to do with who I am, that’s why I’m gonna threaten anyone who associates me with BasedBeffJezos

[-] self@awful.systems 16 points 2 years ago

oh also, meta-ironic cult is also a term used by Remilia and some of the other Thiel death cults to describe themselves

What I’m trying to get at is that the practicalities of improving technology are generally skated over by aingularatians in favor of imagining technology as a magic number that you can just throw “intelligence” at to make it go up.

this is where the singularity always lost me. like, imagine, you build an AI and it maxes out the compute in its server farm (a known and extremely easy to calculate quantity) so it decides to spread onto the internet where it’ll have infinite compute! well congrats, now the AI is extremely slow cause the actual internet isn’t magic, it’s a network where latency and reliability are gigantic issues, and there isn’t really any way for an AI to work around that. so singulatarians just handwave it away

or like when they reach for nanomachines as a “scientific” reason why the AI would be able to exert godlike influence on the real world. but nanomachines don’t work like that at all, it’s just a lazy soft sci-fi idea that gets taken way too seriously by folks who are mediocre at best at understanding science
