Being up to date is VERY important. There's a bunch of sites out there that scan the entire internet endlessly and keep information about each IP up to date. For example go here and search your IP.
When a vulnerability is found, attackers will go to sites like these and look for anything to hack. If you don't update more or less immediately, you're at huge risk.
Other then that, everyone else is right. Being available to the public means you're going to have bots scanning you and sending random trash. The only thing you can do is try and block it (fail2ban) or limit it (block certain countries) but at the end of the day its the software that gets the packets (jellyfin) that you need to trust to be secure and discard random junk.

You sounds kind of grumpy, IMO. Who cares what other people do? In my opinion, being an adult is boring. Outside of work you only have a couple hours to yourself. Then there's house work, eating, errands. You have to make time for fun.
Yeah, I have an account on 4 or 5 other servers but I mainly use this one... So there's ~4 more "inactive" users.

That's why I'm here. I have one in the basket, one at my feet, and the other wrapped around my left arm... Its 4am, I can't sleep, as soon as one of them moves I'm going to get up ans watch some TV before work.
We have a two 1 year olds from the same litter, they cuddle as kittens but not so much anymore. The male is a bit of a jerk to the female but he's starting to settle down.
Also, 2 kittens, they were neutered a month or two ago. They're crazy and cuddle with everyone when they're not ripping up our toilet paper all over the house or locking themselves in a room (playing behind the door until it closes)
100% don't buy from Purism. I had their laptop. Librem 14? 15? And I gave it away to a friend after about a year. I had so many problems with it.
I had pre-ordered the phone but I asked for a refund just a month or so before everyone started saying they stopped giving refunds.
I have 4 pinephones, while they're not daily driver ready, they're awesome little devices and I've written a couple things for them. I also have 0 complaints about my system 76 laptop.

Before I made my account here I was doing research to see if I was going to start my own instance or not. I had very similar requirements as yours but also some around security, patching, and long walks on the beach.
Honestly, the lemmy.ca admins (including Shadow) seem to know their stuff. They're active on github, patch regularly, and actually care about the community. As an end user, everything I could ask for. <3
I try to spoof all this on my devices and make it look like I use Chrome on Windows. Maybe I should show I'm FF on Linux.
