I think they were being sarcastic, playing with the criticizing Israel's government = antisemitism nonsense

Governments (public health units notwithstanding) promoting things in the name of safety remind me of Conservative and Christian groups promoting things in the name of child welfare. It makes spotting lies easier

In the early days of the Israeli war on Gaza, the campaign to suppress any pro-Palestine view, in fact, any anti-war view, was most intense.

Some countries in Europe, which pride themselves on supposed freedom of speech, either banned or considered banning the Palestinian flag, or even specific chants.

In some countries, especially France, the campaign turned even more extreme where artists, sportsmen and even ordinary citizens were attacked, and in some cases tried, for social media statements expressing solidarity with the Palestinians.

This period shall be remembered as the war on freedom of speech in many European societies.

“We demand an immediate end to this unjust war against Palestinians and implementation of the two-state solution,” the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahmat, reportedly told the meeting of heads of state in Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

The summit, which began on January 15, runs until January 20.

Cuba’s vice president, Salvador Valdes Mesa, said that “Since October 7, we have witnessed one of the cruelest genocidal acts ever to be recorded by history.”

“How can the Western countries, who claim to be so civilized, justify the murder of women and children in Gaza, the indiscriminate bombings of hospitals and schools and deprivation of access to safe water and food?” he reportedly questioned, in his speech on Friday.

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, 24,927 Palestinians have been killed, and 62,388 wounded in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza starting on October 7.

Me, personally, it's not a big deal. But in several ways Canadian identity is based on comparing ourselves with the United States, as if it were the only relevant comparator. I see this in policy and people's national identification. So, I do think a good number of Canadians dislike being mistaken for Americans because it doesn't align with their identity. Separate from that - and the context of this post is travel - there's a popular idea amongst Canadian travellers - especially the hostel-going type - that the world perceives Canadians better than Americans. So, many will display Canada flags when they travel to preemptively fend off the idea that they're American

I was looking for a relatively quick analysis to experiment with some of the NBA stats APIs, so I examined player performance before and after the Raptors-Knicks trade on 2023-12-30 from a Raptors perspective.

I excluded the shorthanded game they played against the Pistons that day, and compared players' average game scores for the ~31 games prior to and ~7 games after the trade (including the pitiful loss to the Jazz on January 13th).

I chose the Hollinger Game Score to summarize player performance, which can be calculated from a player's box score.

The formula is: PTS + 0.4 * FG - 0.7 * FGA - 0.4*(FTA - FT) + 0.7 * ORB + 0.3 * DRB + STL + 0.7 * AST + 0.7 * BLK - 0.4 * PF - TOV.

Game Score was created to give a rough measure of a player's productivity for a single game. The scale is similar to that of points scored, (40 is an outstanding performance, 10 is an average performance, etc.).

Basketball-Reference.com contains many tables of data for players, teams, seasons. For example, the Advanced Stats table on the Seasons page is where I’ve been getting data for the Offensive and Defensive Ratings posts. I grab the data by clicking “Share & Export” beside the table, “Get table as CSV”, and then copying and pasting that into a text editor. (In this case, don’t copy the first row; and you never want a comma at the end of the last line.) Save this file, and then it can be opened (as a CSV) in R, Python, or a spreadsheet application like microsoft Excel.

Such tables/spreadsheets or “flat files” are easy for humans to read but aren’t very efficient from a data storage perspective. As a result, big data are stored in less human-readable formats, and special software is needed to access that data and convert it into tables on the user’s end.

NBA.com’s API (ie, a bit of software) is among the most popular sources of free NBA big data. To access it, you need software on your end, and most NBA.com API clients seem to be in Python (nba_api package) or R (hoopR, nbastatR).

This page provides a long list NBA data sources: [Josh Gonzalez on Medium] An Ever-Expanding List of NBA Data Sources

Previous edition: Team offensive and defensive ratings (Dec 1, '23)

Plot explanationOffensive and defensive ratings are the estimated number of points teams score and allow per 100 possessions. Horizontal and vertical lines are league averages. Diagonal bands reflect net ratings, which are offensive ratings minus defensive ratings. The green dot-dash line is a net rating of +10, green dotted +5, red dotted -5, and red dot-dash -10).

I like coffee, tea, beer, wine. They're all pretty bitter. Non-alcoholic substitutes like soda and juice are typically sweet. That's the appeal for me, having a bitter non-alcoholic drink, like a 'near beer'. I'm not strongly into this trend, but I understand an angle to it when I try to cut back my beer consumption

The controversy exploded over the weekend when it came to light that MPs from all parties, Trudeau and [president of Ukraine] Zelenskky honoured this individual with cheers, salutes and applause.

"We have here in the chamber today a Ukrainian Canadian war veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today even at his age of 98," Rota said on Friday. "I am very proud to say that he is from North Bay and from my riding of Nipissing—Timiskaming. He is a Ukrainian hero and a Canadian hero, and we thank him for all his service."

I think this issue raises how complex political history is more than anything. And, yeah, MPs should probably have more guidance with this stuff. "Speaker invites Nazi" seems so 'gotcha!' without learning anything from the incident
