“SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!!!!

Come to mother baby, let me hold you

In my arms

M'lud I never wanted him to

Commit financial fraud

Why'd he ever have to leave me?

Worm, your honor, let me take him home”

-The Trial, Pink Fried

Kind of a tangent: to me it seems that there’s a penchant for right wing accusations to be projections of right wing wrongdoing onto other parties. My go to examples would be fake news (should be self explanatory) and corruption (e.g. Soros bucks).

What would the lab leak correspond to? Off the top of my head I might go with the opioid epidemic, if only so that I don’t speak a US originated virus lab leak into existence.

Originally I had a longer and more nuanced gut response that was along the lines of: “ok people have weird dreams and whatever, sure, but why would you publish this instead of just talking about it in therapy?” which you have answered more or less

it'd be only quantifiable things. first thought: # of hotdogs you can eat in 10 minutes.

Yeah, exactly. My first draft of this included this passage from the post:

If I ran the world, I would want newspapers to do the opposite of that - comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable, that kind of thing. I would want it to find dirt on people who were puffed up way too high riding the top of the popularity wave, and find reasons to defend and stand up for people who were vulnerable and getting piled on. Still, it seems like in real life people do the opposite. Again, I don’t think I’m discovering anything surprising here, I just want to make this explicit for people who have otherwise just sort of been noticing it on the fringes of their consciousness.

Basically: "Why can't journalists just give nice guys like us a chance?"

This is what I wanted, thanks. Stellar work as always.

Ah fuck as a xoogler I do this. Everything I do is terrible (see my advent of code snippets) and I frequently refer to things that existed in the google ecosystem.

Aw dawg, that’s on me for supposing for a moment that his story had truth to it. I did think it strange that this rich dude’s mum had to go to the ER for something, but decided to apply good faith.

So now it’s even more cynical. Scott, who now lives a life of convenience, doesn’t have any of his own stories to parlay into AI hype, so he has to wear someone else’s suffering as stolen valor.

Oh for sure. Another way to think about that is: they actually are honestly and genuinely trying to help humanity with their inventions and so forth, except for them “humanity” is just the wallet of whoever is bankrolling them.

Haha yes “execution”

Also, lol @ this exchange: SneerClubMod:

I mod the subreddit, I’m aware of the history of the sidebar quote[\n] Your interpretation of why we did that is incorrect

LWer:

Then why did you do that?

SneerClubMod

Because it’s a funny example of Yudkowsky’s persecution complex, and therefore an amusing ironic self-appellation

How do they not read this and self-reflect? Oh, that's right, they're in a cult.
