Hello! I want to change keyboard layout from command line, but online I only found this, but unfortunately qdbus org.kde.keyboard /Layouts setLayout "xyz" does no longer work, and looking for "keyboard" or "layout" in keyboard viewer gave 0 results... any tips?
thanks in advance!

Hello everyone! I hope to be posting in the correct place, if not please tell me and I'll delete this. I have a W11 VM on my EndeavourOS KDE laptop that I use because of some software I need for university that does not run under wine (LabVIEW and Keil uVision). The VM is running on virt-manager (QEMU KVM) using the virtio drivers, and it works really well (I mean, to be windows). The only problem is that today I run a windows update and... sbem, BSOD after reboot. The automatic diagnostic fails to do anything, uninstalling updates fails, of all possible recovery options the only one that does "something" is the command prompt, that I have 0 experience using. This was the first time updating since I created the VM a few weeks ago. Now my question is: is this fixable? Is there at least a way to recover my files, perhaps using the cmd? Thanks in advance to everyone!

EDIT: I managed to get my files back by adding a new CDROM device in the VM with a live xubuntu iso. Then from Windows recovery shit reboot into BIOS and select that device to boot from (in my case CDROM 3), then navigate to the Users/thenameoftheuser folder and backup on a USB or something all the data you need. I'll try now to fix the windows installation without fearing the loss of my data... Lesson learned, never trust windows neither inside a VM, always better to keep important data in a separate disk (like shared memory) so that in case of VM failure they are safe in a different place
thanks to everyone!!! marking this as solved as my data are safe now, I'll update if I'll achieve to fix windows (perhaps by reinstalling)

Hello! I recently installed Easer on my android device, and would like to set it up to:

  • automatically turn on DND (do not disturb) mode when I enter my university in certain dates
  • automatically turn off DND when I leave the university in the same dates

what I did is:

  1. create a profile "DND on" and "DND off", each one setting the DND mode to the respecting one
  2. create a condition "mon-fri", selecting weekdays from monday to friday
  3. create an event "university event" setting the location of my university
  4. also create a condition "university condition" with the same settings as the event (because I don't know which one is the correct one to use)
  5. create a script "is weekdays" with no parents and no profile set, "condition" trigger, and assigned "mon-fri" to it
  6. create a script "university in" with "is_weekdays" as parent, profile "DND on", and then assigning "university event" or "university condition" (don't know which oneis better), and setting "recurrent" to true
  7. the same as point above, but checking "inverse scenario" (don't know the exact translation)

when I enter my university, it works correctly, activating the DND mode. The problem is when I leave the university, because it just do nothing, leaving the DND mode on. What am I doing wrong?

thanks in advance!

Hello! I'm currently very very dependent on TickTick (not tiktok) because of a single simple feature: persistent notification alerts. I can set events and tasks as in many other similar apps, but once the reminder is triggered, a persistent notification is showed, until I manually say "mark as completed" or "remind me later". This way I avoid accidentally removing (and missing) it by clearing my notification tray. However, it is closed source and only available on Google Play. I'd like to replace it (if possible) with a FOSS app. Do you know of an app with this feature? Thanks in advance Android folks!

I just realized that the universal icon for settings is a gear, and KDE PLASMA DOES NOT

IT'S ITS LOGO

Hello there! I'm currently using telegram FOSS from fdroid, and don't have telegram premium. It's okay to have limitations on animated emoji and such, that are limitations imposed by the server, but I really cannot tolerate limitations imposed by the client. I want to rearrange folders. It won't make me do it without premium. Total bullshit. I want to hide the awful ads on channels. It won't make me hide them without premium. Hateful. Is there a client that just removes all thos idiotic antifeatures from the official client?

Hello there! This is my problem: I'm going to buy a new smartphone, and I'd really like to degoogle myself as much as possible. The idea would be to buy a device compatible with LineageOS, but... Supported devices are usually older models, and often there are newer devices with better specs for the same price, that does not support lineageOS. Is seems a shame to buy a device with lower specs than another one just because of software compatibility. So the alternative would be to buy an unsupported device, unlock the bootloader and debloat it as much as possible, flash privileged fdroid and aurora store on it, install microg, etc... What do you suggest me to do? Is the second alternative a viable option? What other steps should I do if I decide to go that way?

Thanks in advance folks!

Edit:
Thanks to anyone for the great answers! I finally decided to buy a pixel 6 (or 6 pro if I find a good deal) and install a custom ROM on it! GrapheneOS will support it for "only" 3 more years, while other roms like lineageos or divestos will have longer support. What do you suggest? Graphene OS and when support ends switch to another one? O directly use the other one?

Hello! I'm trying to do this:

but I can't seem to find a "good" way to do it:

if I just place it in the Kirigami.Page it is displayed, well, in the page, as in the image above.

Kirigami.ApplicationWindow {
   pageStack.initialPage: Kirigami.ScrollablePage {
      Kirigami.SearchField { // TODO move in the page header
         id: searchField
         Layout.fillWidth: true
      }
   }
}

if I place it in the header of the window it is displayed before the actual header even:

Kirigami.ApplicationWindow {
    header: Kirigami.SearchField { // TODO move in the page header
         id: searchField
         Layout.fillWidth: true
      }
   pageStack.initialPage: Kirigami.ScrollablePage {

   }
}

if I place it just before the Page it goes inside the header, but all aligned to the top instead of nicely in the center:

Kirigami.ApplicationWindow {
    Kirigami.SearchField { // TODO move in the page header
         id: searchField
         Layout.fillWidth: true
      }
   pageStack.initialPage: Kirigami.ScrollablePage {

   }
}

what is the correct way of doing this?

thanks in advance!

Hello fellow KDE users! I use KDE Plasma on my tablet, but found windows managements a bit painful when using only the touchscreen, so I wrote this KWin script: it just organize automatically each window in a separate virtual desktop, maximized and borderless, allowing you to use the built in touchscreen gestures (3 fingers slide) to switch between them (animations are real smooth!)
I also released it on pling/kde store

Hope you'll find it useful! Let me know your thoughts about this!

Opinions on Swisscows? (lemmy.kde.social)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by tubbadu@lemmy.kde.social to c/privacy@lemmy.ml

Hello! Since I'm unable to find a public searxng instance that could work for more than a week and sadly cannot selfhost one, I'm looking for a replacement. I so found Swisscows, that promise to be privacy respecting, but here on lemmy didn't find any opinion on it. Do any of you use it? Why or why not?
I'm also considering Qwant and Mojeek.

Hello! Yesterday I submitted my first merge request to a KDE software! I forked the repo, applied the edits, committed them and pushed to my fork, and then from gitlab created a merge request. after a few hours, the author pushed something into the master, making my merge request 1 commit behind the master. On the merge request details page, I now get this error:

Merge blocked: the source branch must be rebased onto the target branch. [rebase without pipeline] [rebase]

If I try to click on [rebase], I get this red error:

Source branch is protected from force push

what should I do to make my merge request "mergeable" again?
