For this Saturday Anime Night, first up is The Adventures of Captain Wrongel (1976), a Soviet slapstick cartoon from the same crew behind the later Treasure Island (1989). An incompetent sea captain enters a race around the world with a motley crew; can he bumble his way to victory? Time to find out. This is one of the highest-rated Eastern Bloc cartoons on Letterboxd, and I finally found a good-quality, complete rip, so let’s give it a whirl. After that is Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop (2020), one of the most popular anime movies we have yet to watch. Teens meet during the summer. One is a nerd who expresses himself in haikus. They hang out at the beach a lot. Looks real nice. Sometimes, all a movie needs is to be cozy. So far, this is the only major film of director Kyohei Ishiguro.

We’ll start at 9PM EST on Hextube, right here: https://live.hexbear.net/c/movies

For this Saturday Anime Night, first up is Chie the Brat (1981), directed by future Ghibli alumnus Isao Takahata. It is about a short-tempered girl who helps her dad run his tavern and schemes to reunite him with her mom. This is one of the few Ghibli-adjacent movies we have yet to watch, and it has received good reviews, so let’s give it a whirl. After that is Osomatsu-san: The Movie (2015), based on the TV anime sitcom Osomatsu-san, which itself was a revival of the classic 1970s gag anime/manga Osomatsu-kun. Sextuplet brothers go to their high-school reunion and find that all of their friends have become boring. Oh god, is this what adulthood has in store for them? Wacky antics ensue. There may be some rocking of dudes. Nice reviews for this one, and since the show is an episodic comedy, no prior Osomatsu-san/kun knowledge is necessary.

For this Saturday Anime Night, first up is Go Panda Go! (1972), directed by future Ghibli alumnus Isao Takahata and written and storyboarded by the legend himself, Hayao Miyazaki. It is proto-My Neighbor Totoro: a girl meets a silly magical panda and they have some silly adventures. After that is Cat Soup (2001), a highly-acclaimed short film about a cat who ventures into the netherwold to rescue his sister. It is the only well-known work of its director, Tatsuo Sato. The third and last anime for the night is Ride Your Wave (2019), a teen romance from renowned auteur Masaaki Yuasa (Night Is Short Walk On Girl, Lu Over the Wall, Inu-Oh). Everyone liked the other Yuasa films we watched, so let’s do another.

For this Saturday Anime Night, first up is Animal Treasure Island (1971), an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, but the characters are animals. The director is Hiroshi Ikeda, who was, oddly enough, one of the top producers at Nintendo in the 80s, overseeing both Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. More directly relevant to anime history, though, is that this was the first movie on which Hayao Miyazaki was lead writer and storyboard director. Reviews are surprisingly good for this one, so we’re watching it. After that is Time of Eve (2010), about an android in the future who sneaks away from her owner to a café where humans and androids are treated equally. Robots rock. This was originally released as six episodes, and then combined into a single movie afterward. Great reviews for this one, so let’s check it out.

This is a one-off, special 9/11 edition of Anime Night by popular demand. It’s the long-awaited screening of the fifth and six Project A-ko movies, the final entries in the series, which transplant the characters into a completely new setting and otherwise have nothing to do with the previous installments. They are also not as well-regarded as the original four, but god damn it, we’re not leaving them unwatched. I expect, at least, that chicks will continue to rock.

holy shit these are the same thousands of complete nothing stories every single time, posted as if they were some profound insights.

"I was in first period. Then, the teacher said our nation was under attack. Then I learned that planes hit the World Trade Center. Then I went home."

Or, the West Coast version:

"I woke up and turned on the TV. The second plane had already hit. I watched the events unfold on the TV."

jfc at this point I am convinced Americans are pathological narcissists

For this Saturday Anime Night, first up is The Dagger of Kamui (1985), an adaptation of the manga of the same name, concerning a young ninja’s globetrotting adventure to avenge his murdered family. The director is renowned auteur Rintaro (Galaxy Express 999, Metropolis). This is one of the better-regarded anime films of the 80s that we have yet to watch, so let’s check it out. After that is On-Gaku: Our Sound (2019), a musical about a trio of teenaged delinquents who decide to start a band. Dudes proceed to rock. This one has received rave reviews across the board.
