For this Saturday Anime Night, first up is The Orphan Brother (1961), continuing our journey through the early Toei catalogue. Oddly enough, this one is based on the same source material as Sansho the Bailiff (1954), which we watched last year. Kids are sold into slavery, one of them gets out, and then turns the tables on the slaveowners. It is aesthetically beautiful, as with all of these old Toei movies. Shares a director with Magic Boy (1959) and Journey to the West (1960), which we watched over the last two weeks. After that is Steamboy (2004), the other magnum opus from Akira (1988) director Katsuhiro Otomo, which we somehow have not watched yet. Boy comes into possession of a jetpack; the powers-that-be want to use the tech for war. Conflict ensues. This one is famous for its extremely high-quality animation.

We’ll start at 9PM EST on Hextube, right here: https://live.hexbear.net/c/movies

For this Saturday Anime Night, first up is Journey to the West, AKA Saiyuki, AKA Journey to the West (1960), the fourth anime feature film ever. The badass monkey Sun Wukong joins a human prince and some other animals on a quest to India. Wacky antics ensue. Oddly enough, the Ox King in this movie was the main inspiration for Bowser in Super Mario Bros. Pretty good reviews for this, so let’s check it out. It shares a director (Taiji Yabushita) with Tale of the White Serpent (1958) and Magic Boy (1959), which we previously saw. After that is Lu Over the Wall (2017), a musical about a boy who meets a mermaid, from renowned auteur Masaaki Yuasa. Everyone liked Night Is Short Walk on Girl (2017) and Inu-Oh (2021), so this seems like a safe bet.

For this Saturday Anime Night, first up is Magic Boy (1959), the third anime feature film ever, and the first based on Japanese mythology, and the first released overseas, and the only one from the 1950s that we have yet to watch. A boy lives in the woods with friendly animals until a demon kills one of them. He starts training in the magic arts for revenge. Pretty good reviews for this, so let’s check it out. It shares a director (Taiji Yabushita) with Tale of the White Serpent (1958), which we previously saw. After that is Giovanni’s Island (2014), about two boys who befriend each other on the soon-to-be-Soviet island of Sakhalin at the end of WW2. I wonder if this has happy ending? I guess we’ll find out. Great reviews for this one. This is, so far, the best-known and best-regarded film of director Mizuho Nishikubo, who also did the 1987 Megami Tensei OVA, of all things.
