Unfortunately PCs don't have very big back seats...πŸ™„

If I had a phone set up like that, and, say, ICE or TSA took it, what would they be able to get from it? And I know that legally they can't make you give up your PIN, but what's to keep them from just beating it out of you? Cops of any stripe rarely if ever face consequences for their actions, especially in the US.

Joan Westenberg mentioned this in her "Trump-proof tech stack" post; anyone have any experience with this? It says it's open source, self-hostable, and based in France.

Unfortunate Andy Yen comments aside, a big plus is that cozy actually has a Linux desktop client (!), unlike Proton.

Any opinions on infomaniak? (www.infomaniak.com)

They have several apps on F-Droid, which is usually a good sign . . .

EDIT: But try to sign up and they want your name, address, and phone number. Forget it!

I've had this for quite a while, before switching back to Proton from tuta. Proton of course has aliases, which would make Relay redundant, but Relay also gives you a phone mask which is very helpful to have and Proton doesn't yet offer this.

Think this is because I just updated fonts-noto-color-emoji?

Well, in any event, this is an outrage I shall not stand for! πŸ˜‰

EDIT: Well, this is what happens when you aim for Vietnamization, I guess. 🀷

EDIT EDIT: Using the menu editor on Linux Mint Cinnamon, you can usually edit the comments for an app by clicking on its preferences, and ironically I was doing that to mark the apps that are US-based with the flag as a reminder to find alternatives to them!

Because it's kind of hard! Even if I follow their instructions. Maybe I'm just dumb . . . πŸ™

Tor is off the table for me because it's so slow. If you can point to some test sites or documentation that supports your choice, please include!

Especially for the less tech-savvy among us?

It would be nice if I could get SMS 2FA-type notifcations on my desktop without having to use my phone.

I probably wouldn't use Signal with it, since Beeper's own page seems to suggest that sending Signal messages with it would be less secure! And, I guess, SMS isn't secure to begin with . . .

If I download and install Element, and then look at the SMS bridges available on Matrix's website, the recommended bridge instructions sends me over to Beeper, since I don't have my own server. Old and confused here . . .

πŸ™ Crap, didn't see that part.

EDIT: Also, another thing I hate about most sites that sell ebooks is that they're rarely explicit about what their file formats are.

πŸ™Please don't say that.

I had a feeling that that was the case . . .

You could look at infomaniak, but I didn't have the best experience trying out (or even getting started with) their services. Finding a provider that has all of Proton's apps is going to be tough (or at least it was from me while I was looking to escape from Tuta). Good luck, tho.

EDIT: Infomaniak is on F-Droid!

EDIT EDIT: Infomaniak is only available in Europe! Infomaniak is only available with a European phone number, so using a VPN won't help! πŸ™πŸ‘Ž

That's the Spectre. "He's more powerful than God," I always used to say.
