Wayland Protocols has long had a problem with new protocols sitting for months, to years at a time for even basic functionality.

This is hugely problematic when some protocols implement very primitive and basic functionality such as frog-fifo-v1, which is needed for VSync to not cause GPU starvation under Wayland and also fix the dreaded application freezing when windows are occluded with FIFO/VSync enabled.

We need to get protocols into end-users hands quicker! The main reason many users are still using X11 is because of missing functionality that we can be shipping today, but is blocked for one reason or another.

So i really wanted to ditch windows once and for all so i’ve tried Linux for a week trying different distros (debian, manjaro, ubuntu, opensuse, mint) and first of all why? Why are there so many distros out there? What’s the difference between debian + kde and manjaro + kde? They look the same, they work the same. I don’t get it. Also why do things have to be complicated? I’ve installed debian, installed calibre to manage my ebooks, created a library from an existing library on my hard drive (not the one with debian installed), ERROR! All the files are read-only. What???? I’ve followed multiple guides on how to change permissions and finally solved the problem. Now let’s restart my pc. files on the hard drive are read only WHAT???? Fuck debian, let’s go on manjaro. No problems at all on calibre. Managed to create the library as easy as i did on windows. My question is: where’s the fun in this? It’s just problems, after problems, after problems and i didn’t even start gaming. I mean i tried installing retroarch and importing my saves but of course nothing works. Read this guide, read that guide. Nope. Nothing works. Ok, fuck retroarch let’s customize the appearance of my desktop: move some icons on the panel, center this, adjust height, move this on the left, spent 30 minutes tweaking, very nice… kde crashes, all back to default. Let’s download some apps. I want as many apps that i already know as possible. Let’s see if jdownloader is available for linux. Yep there’s one. Nope, not for manjaro (officially). There’s a AUR package available. Nice. What do i need to do to install a AUR package? A wall of text on the wiki, 20 minutes videos, yay. Ok let’s call it a day. Do i need to live another life to make linux work?

I have a ton of pngs, jpgs, webps, mostly of fantasy art. I want to be able to mass-tag them with things like "character", "environment", "elf", "demon", etc. and then view them based on tags. Can anyone recommend software like this for linux? Bonus points if it also works on windows. Thanks!

Some extra context: frog is invoked in a lot of Valve stuff, such as gamescope. So these existing protocols are already in gamescope and are gaming orientated.

Hi all!

I'm trying to use a local LLM to help me write in an Obsidian.md vault. The local LLM is running through a flatpak called GTP4ALL, which states that it can expose the model through an OpenAI server. The obsidian.md plugin can't reach the LLM on the specified port, so I'm wondering if the flatpak settings need to be changed to allow this.

(This is all on bazzite, so the obsidian program is a flatpak too)

Anyone have an idea where to start?

My laptop is running out of storage space and I don't have anything I can remove anymore to increase it by much, so I'm thinking about building a pc. I'd also like to find a better gpu for doing video editing.

It will be the first one I've built, so I don't really know what I need. Also, does it matter for compatibility for Linux whether I go with AMD or Intel?

The high end of what I want to use it for is video editing with Kdenlive or Davinci Resolve, some modeling and animation in Blender, and some light gaming, like Minecraft or TUNIC.

I figure one of these guides might be useful, but I don't really know which.

Is there anything else I should know for setting up a PC to run Linux?

Edit: Maybe these guides from Logical Increments can help actually.

Is that a thing at all? I doubt it but thought I'd check just in case.

I want to switch from Windows to Linux for my office PC.
I will be using multiple Windows VM because in the office we use multiple software that runs only on Windows (maybe we'll switch to something else, but right now I need the VMs) and because i like to snapshots and go back in time when I test new software.
I thought about Ubuntu because it seems to be the most user friendly.
I always work with a tons of opened windows (mainly Firefox) and I like to have a place for each of them, Right now on Windows I use DisplayFusion that creates multiple virtual screens (7, 4 or the 32" horizontal monitor and 3 on the 28" vertical one, both 4K), I've attached the configuration.
So, the question: is there a software that works kinda like DisplayFusion? (virtual screen each with it's own taskbar, maximize in each of them, remember the position of each window, ...).

P.s. Can I pass only some USB port to a Windows VM using KVM?
Pp.s. Is it possible to use Premiere on a Windows VM? Would it run smooth?

If I globally disable filesystem access to home (i.e. filesystems=!home;), and an app declared that it needs home/some-dir, do I need to explicitly prevent access or do my global settings take precedence?

I’m having an issue with my desktop flickering after my monitors wake up on KDE. When I first turn on my PC it’s fine, but if I walk away and let the monitors turn off when I then come back the desktop starts flickering. It’s only the desktop that flickers, if I have an app open full screen it’s fine but as soon as I minimise it the flickering comes back. It doesn’t seem to be an issue if I leave it long enough for my actual PC to go to sleep, only the monitor. This happens on both Wayland and X11.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this, and if not is it worth submitting a bug report on kde? Or is it probably just something dodgy in my setup? This is with an Nvidia GPU which I suspect has something to do with it (I’ve tried with both the nvidia and nvidia-open drivers). I’ve already had to change the settings so that the screen locks before the monitors sleep otherwise it was causing kwin to crash and I’d get stuck at the login screen for a minute after resuming.

this is odd because it didn't happen with ubuntu 23.10.

If I play my acoustic guitar and record it, output file sounds like an electric guitar, which never happened with ubuntu.

I'm also recording unwanted background noise, but now it's much louder than with ubuntu.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still on the learning path of Linux. But there doesn't seem to many forks of OpenSuse? There are a bunch of forks of Arch, Fedora and Debian, but why not OpenSuse? Is it a license problem or something else?

I'm using "mangohud %command%" in steam launch options, but games just won't launch. I click play in steam and it tries to launch the game but then the green play icon comes back. Works perfectly in lutris. I've looked up guides but haven't found one that helps.

EDIT: it now works in steam after installing mangohud through Mint's package manager.

So i recently learned about a distro that has popped up called venom linux. It's a sourced based distro using the package manager called "scratch"

I am very familiar with gentoo linux and this seems like it has heavy inspiration from the gentoo project. Its very cool to see another source based distro come into the picture. The unique part is it has 2 init systems currently, which are neither systemd or openrc?!?!

They are S6 and sysv Which i have never heard of until now. The install looks via similar to gentoo/classic distro install. Which consists of creating partition schemes and filesystems then extracting a archive of the base file.

Some of the main taking points are

Customizable

No systemd (elogind or any part from it)

Centered Around smaller software

That means the lack of huge software like Gnome"

It's almost done (it would take one or two weeks to clean it up for FOSS release). It's a CLI tool. It works great for my use case, but I'm wondering if there's any interest in a tool like this.

Say you have a simple time-tracking tool that tracks what you do daily. The only problem is that there are gaps and whatnot, which might not look nice if you need to send it to someone else. This tool fixes pretty much all of that.

Main format is a JSON with a "description", and either "duration" or a "start"/"end" pair. It supports the Timewarrior format out of the box (CLI Time tracking tool).

I am looking for works about free software or based on this philosophy, there are books like "Free software for a free society" and documentaries like "Linux code", but I would like to know what other works there are related to free software and this philosophy, there are things like snow crash, which talks about the decentralization of the internet from a fictional and futuristic story, these types of works are also valid.

I'm running EndeavourOS and Windows 11. Each OS is on a separate disk, but I have a data disk that is currently NTFS that mount in both OSes. NTFS causes problems for some things in Linux, and I'm worried it'll bork the drive for windows eventually, so I'm keen to find an alternative. I've read about the WinBTRFS driver so wondering if that is a better way to go?

I don't want to run a server with a share to access this data because it is way to slow for my needs.

i wanna host things (nextcloud, bin, syncthing) myself but im under cg nat so i cant do it the regular way. i have to tunnel my way out. the only concern is that, the raw data is readable by the ssh server (ie. serveo/localhost.run), but i dont anyone elses eyes on my data
