This post will likely not go over well with everyone and some people may not agree with the premise of the question. Mods please remove if not allowed.

I am curious if the MAGA-esque approach to politics is new for the US, or if there have been other examples of similar political movements which may be considered "cult-like". To better define what I mean, here are some examples:

• Large amounts of signs bearing a candidate's name being shown by single individuals (e.g. big trucks covered in Trump signs everywhere)

• Use of a candidate name over the US flag

• Use of a kind of supporter uniform (e.g. the red MAGA hat)

• The "alternative facts" of MAGA, where debate can be impossible because supporters believe anyone who is a detractor must be lying

• In some cases, voter intimidation or coercion from staunch supporters

It seems to me that some of this is new but I'd love to hear other thoughts. I have heard and seen many relatively obvious parallels to German politics in the 20s-40s, but I'm specifically wondering if anything similar has ever been seen in the US before.

What is your favorite mythological figure (of ancient religions only)?

It's a bit shocking to me when I see people online putting 9/11 conspiracies in the same box as "MAGA" conspiracies (for lack of a better term, sorry).

For reference, I was 24 in 2001 living in central NJ. Even without social media or fake news websites or what cable news has become today, I have vivid memories of people having the firm belief that there was something up with the attack on 9/11. Was this just my social circle?

Jet fuel melting steel beams was one of the more fringe and unfounded (and quickly debunked) ideas but the rest of everything on that day was questionable. Tower seven falling, the missing plane debris at the pentagon and central PA, the military / president not responding to known threats, if a person with limited flight time could hit a tower, the fact that Bush attacked a country that had nothing to do with the event, and so much more are still, I thought, reasonable questions - especially when looked at together.

This is not about rehashing each theory. Or maybe it is? Have I missed that everything has been debunked?

I mean, I still believe 9/11 was an inside job or at least high level officials, including Bush, were aware it was going to happen and did nothing to stop it. I thought this was still a common opinion of most or many Americans over the age of forty.

What ancient musical instruments gained popularity after modern reconstructions? I know that the lyre is one of them, but what others?

Examples: Itchy & Scratchy from The Simpsons, The Scary Door from Futurama, or The Grand Inquisitor from Dostoevsky.

Ima start- I have an interest in both kidcore and Lolita ~(NOT THE BOOK, ITS A JAPANESE FASHION TREND)~ Fashion. I always wanted to combine the two to get this pastel, simple but kiddish style. Lots of baby blues and pinks, A whole lot of overalls and pig tails. Just cutesy and innocent :D It's like Kidcore but minus the Lego brick color themes. I'd probably call it uhhhh... I think Teenybopper would be cute!

Why the Linux ecosystem cannot be considered "standardized", unlike Windows and Mac?

Quite frequently I come across scanned books that are viewable for free online. For example, the publisher put them there (such as preview chapters), a library (old books from their collection that are in public domain), etc. Since I like hoarding data, and the online viewers that are used to present the book to me might not be very practical, I frequently try to download the books one way or another. This requires toying with the "inspect element" tool and various other methods of getting the images/PDF. Now, all that I access is what is, well, accessible; I don't hack into the servers or something. But - the stuff is meant to be hidden from the normal user. Does that act of hiding the material, no matter how primitive and easily circumvented, mean that I'm not allowed to access it at all?

I suppose ripping a public domain book is no big deal, but would books under copyright fare differently?

Mainly I'm asking out of curiosity, I don't expect the police to come visit me for ripping a 16th century dictionary.

Note: I live in EU, but I'd be curious to hear how this is treated elsewhere too.

Edit: I also remembered a funny trick I noticed on one site - it allows viewing PDFs on their website, but not downloading, unless you pay for the PDF. But when you load the page, even without paying, the PDF is already downloaded onto your computer and can be found in the browser cache. Is it legal to simply save the file that is already on your computer?

I'm not sure if this is going to sound strange, but I'm so accustomed to the voices of different kinds of people that my mind at this point just registers the many different accents as different voices within one accent (as in my mind doesn't say "oh that's another accent" anymore, it doesn't register it) and I actually miss being able to appreciate peoples' accents as accents, which sucks when for example you're attracted to them.

I see more and more posts that are just a link to a video, post, or article. There’s no text in the description.

I’d like to see some of the article quoted and/or a brief reason this is currently being posted to Lemmy.

When it’s just a link, the cynical part of me thinks it’s just an SEO bot—especially if the account never posts any comments.

What are some ways to encourage posts that are more engaging?

Or should I just ignore, downvote, and/or block those doing this kind of posting?
