A good reminder that Fallout: London is very much the exception, not the rule when it comes to these large fan projects. Really sad to hear still, however.
Fallout: London is so good, I can't believe that it's a free mod. It feels like a standalone Fallout title. Can't believe they convinced all those amazing voice actors to work for free. The level of detail put into the game world is beyond impressive as well.
I tried to get into Fallout 4 for the second or third time recently, and have just given up, and uninstalled it. It's the simplified dialogue that ultimately robs it of any meaning for me. Nobody has anything very interesting to say, and the player just has a few one-word prompts to respond with. I don't suppose that's any different in Fallout: London? I imagine they'd have had to go to unreasonable lengths to change it.
from what i have experienced, fan projects need good leadership (clear aims, no endless scope creeping and can avoid drama) plus a core group of major contributors to succeed
also when you inevitably lose someone important to the project (be it obligations or drama), you have replacements ready and dont have the whole project fall over because one person was too important
this team failed at that: leader quits and whole thing disbands
This is a lesson loads of actual businesses need to learn. Put all your proverbial eggs into one overworked, underpaid basket, and when they inevitably get burnt out or get a better offer and leave, you're up shit creek without the knowledge that kept everything ticking over.
"Bus factor"
There's an enormous Battle for Middle Earth overhaul mod that released last year.
There's also an entirely unrelated fan attempt to remake BFME2 which I'm personally convinced is never going to see the light of day.
We're apparently getting Skyblivion this year, too. That sounds like it'll be fun.
