It's to steal tsmc tech and the profits associated with it. The military doesn't need leading tech. Intels 14nm+++++++++ is fine as well. Never heard of stories from the plant but I don't think they are capable of operating without Taiwanese workers.

all the more reason to grey rock efforts to re-establish semiconductor manufacturing outside of taiwan.

also: npr did some coverage on the people who are building these fabs and you can hear their stories of the crazy treatement they're getting from the taiwanese leadership.
