Image of destruction in Mandalay, Myanmar, from Al Jazeera.

As if the ongoing civil war wasn't enough, Myanmar has now been struck by a very powerful earthquake, resulting in 2000 deaths and thousands more injured as of the time of writing. Estimates are that the death toll could reach 10,000. Infrastructure like roads and bridges are damaged, and the hospitals are overwhelmed. The earthquake struck during Eid prayers, resulting in even higher casualties as several mosques collapsed. 20 million people already required humanitarian assistance in Myanmar, and now the situation there will be even worse. International rescue teams have rushed into the country, and aid is being raised, though with USAID experiencing the... changes that it is, the United States will be of even more limited help than usual. So far, China has sent $14 million, while USAID has supplied $2 million. In Thailand, the death toll seems considerably lower, though there has still been significant damage; a skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok.

Myanmar is located very close to the boundary between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. In particular, the country is divided in two by the north-south oriented Sagaing fault. This fault is typically strike-slip; that is, each side of the fault moves horizontally past each other. The earthquake's depth was 10 kilometers, which is pretty shallow, and its proximity to the surface amplified the felt force of the earthquake. Additionally, the soft soil in this region tends to further amplify seismic waves through a process called liquefaction. Combine all this with the lackluster building codes due to many years of impoverishment and civil wars, and this explains why the death toll, and the expense to the country in general to repair damage, will probably be extremely high.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

I forgot to post about it but last week something crazy happened on portuguese public TV. So we're gonna have elections in may because parliament has been dissolved after the PM was mired in corruption scandals (I wrote about it here) and they're gonna have 10 minute speedrun interviews with each party leader, last week was the portuguese communist party general secretary Paulo Raimundo's turn, the interviewer was Jose Rodrigues dos Santos who is a lifetime teleprompter reader for the public television RTP and also writes Dan Brown-esque novels that, sadly, make him the most popular (in terms of sales) portuguese author today (Jose Saramago is crying in his grave).

The interview was, I shit you not, literally 10 minutes of the guy asking Raimundo whether he supports "sending weapons to ukraine", "arming ukraine", "defeating putin", "arming europe" and shit like that, with Raimundo always saying that the party doesn't support any of that and that there should've been and still should be negotiations to end the war, which it's what the party's been saying since the war started. As blatant as it was, I saw that even some anti-communist pro-war people were freaked out at the unprofessionalism of the interviewer, it does fucking suck that there wasn't any space for Raimundo to talk about housing (major issue right now), corruption, wages and unions, so anyone who watched that is gonna be thinking the PCP is just the "ukraine war party" when really no one should care about that shit.

Aside from that there have been a couple of polls and to summarize the results, like I suspected, the ruling party who's PM literally gets a monthly salary on the side for his family's consultancy service to a casino conglomerate and a housing conglomerate is likely to end up in first place, the socialist party will probably lose vote share for being perceived as having caused the crisis, so will the leftist Bloco de Esquerda due to an internal scandal, the right wing liberals will likely rise a bit, the far right will remain as it is or lose a bit also due to scandals but remain in 3rd place, the communists might regain a bit of their vote share (although the real question is whether they'll regain their strongholds in the interior, which they lost in the last election) and, worse of all, the pro-war eurocuck greens will probably get the most votes of the 3 parties to the left of the socialist party.

We got a teaser of this scenario earlier last week when in the regional elections in Madeira the ruling party (which has never lost an election in the region despite it being incredibly poor) even with the leading guy from the party's Madeira branch being investigated for corruption by the public prosecutor, actually increased its vote share and was 1 seat away from absolute majority. Note that 2 years ago the decently popular socialist PM Costa (now in president of the european council) RESIGNED because the public prosecutor revealed they were investigating him for corruption only to find out nothing.

So the conclusion is that the public prosecutor has been totally discredited, even though EVERY portuguese person will tell you they hate corruption and that the country is rife with it.

Lastly, a tragedy has struck the ruling government coalition, see it's a coalition called Democratic Alliance composed by the Social Democratic Party (Center Right), Democract Social Center (Right) and Popular Monarchist Party (monarchist, yes in Portugal, yes they want the king back). The only reason the PSD brought the monarchists is was so that they could use the name DA, since that was used once in the 1980s by the same parties, problem is that the monarchists, not seeing that they're goals were being achieved by this coalition, has already declared they won't run in the May elections with the other 2 parties and legally that means the PSD and CDS can't use the name DA. They tried to sneak around it by proposing to run under "AD - Aliança Democrática - PSD/CDS", the court struck that down, so they're gonna have to come up with a new name until May.

Amazing that the brainworms have entered Portugal. A country with no history or threat of Russian invasion.

[-] grandepequeno@hexbear.net 32 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It's less framed in terms of russia invading us usually but in russia invading EVROPAAAA and the provincial inferiority complex of many portuguese people activating itself to pretend that we're gonna have a say in anything instead of just following whatever france and germany do.

"European" means "good" here, it's genuinely infuriating
