So... spoiler-free answer...
I'm a big fan of the setting.
I was, at first, super into Gale! I was playing a rogue elf so he didn't seem condescending. We were getting along fine. Then he told me about his past.
I went from Gale fan to hell fuckin no so goddamned fast! It was infuriating because none of my friends had any experience with the setting, so it took them longer to see the... toxic mentality that put him in the position he's in. I almost threw my controller! So glad we hadn't been screwing at that point or I would have wanted to kill him! I remember launching into a rant where I said that Gale was either the most arrogant fucking man alive, or he was by far and away the dumbest, and trying to explain just what it would mean if he could do what he was trying to do...
I'm still mad about it! You did what? What a fucking asshole! And to pretend that any of that was for anything beyond greed, beyond sheer arrogance! He had everything but it wasn't enough! Godforfuckingbid this man just accept his place!
Massive green flag from the fiance though. He was playing it behind me, and without any knowledge of the universe, he got to the same scene and said he also hated Gale was too greedy to be happy.
...is the spoiler-free version of that. (That situation) wasn't good enough? He had to risk the (positive situation) for something so childish and selfish?
Correct answer. Good litmus test.
He seems affable and then you learn that he's a scumbag on a cosmic scale! I honestly wish there were more redeeming qualities to him
He was groomed. So that's something.
That certainly is a component of it I admit I hadn't really thought of

The power disparity in the relationship between the god of magic and a mortal wizard/devotee does raise a lot of ethical questions. Definitely not a good look for Mystra.I still am skeeved out by his emotional manipulation tactics and willingness to drag you and potentially the entire world down with him.
He's selfish, yes. But a lot of that is because of his overconfidence which is just him masking his insecurities. Imo, he'd be a lot better if he was a girl because of a lot of gendered baggage to how his emotions get read.
Sounds like I'll probably end up hating him too lol
