With open world slop being so widespread, what even is the appeal of GTA6?

[-] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Rockstar games are not typical open world slop, focusing more on story and immersion. There's a world of difference between Sasso Creedo #5042389 and Red Dead Redemption 2

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago

RDR2 is elevated open world slop

GTA is just a product of a different era

[-] Crucible@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

5 had the most generic and shortest single player yet and was just a cover for the MMO loot box scheme they released, they're just as sold out as Ubisoft

[-] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago

kill cops in South Florida.

for someone who has been killing cops in SoCal for 10+ years, I appreciate a change of venue.

I also am curious about what sort of novel mechanics will be in this one. last one I could take an in-game selfie with the burning body of a cop I killed.

maybe this one will let me make a little in-game cellphone video with music playing while I burn one alive on the beach and shoot an AK into the air.

some open world games are like an easel waiting for an artist to help them become a masterpiece.

I kinda wish they'd get away from NY, SoCal, SoFlo. I wanna see like the Midwest. Give me a GTA set in prohibition, and let me run booze from Toronto thru Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee. Underground speakeasies, tommy guns, WW1 veterans, freaky Christian cults.

Or DC area, with all kinds of corrupt politicians, or Texas with oil magnates, border patrol, and drug cartels. The deep south with Old Money, militias, confederate diehards.

[-] Lussy@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago

NY, SoCal, SoFlo.

These are the only American places that are actually cities. They had to condense Miami just so they could make it seem like an urban environment and not just a big suburb.

Chicago is a good shout, though.

[-] Dessa@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

Chicago is just the most obvious omission, but if Las Vegas gets to be a city, Detroit has got that beat by a mile

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

there's more places named in manhunt, bully and ye olde 2d gta games, i think one of them is fake chicago.

[-] Flyberius@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

They mention Carcer curry in GTA 3. I'm annoyed we've never seen that. Maybe that's fake Chicago

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

Give me a GTA set in prohibition

Mafia games...

[-] Dessa@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

Isn't Mafia more like Godfather type stuff?

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah I guess, it's like a Mafia drama. The first one (Definitive Edition is excellent ) has some prohibition era stuff where you smuggle some alcohol.

[-] cerealkiller@hexbear.net 15 points 2 days ago

Modern Vice City, I guess. Also It's technically supposed to be the finale of the modern-ish trilogy.

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago

Also It's technically supposed to be the finale of the modern-ish trilogy.

3D trilogy (because fuck LCS and VCS apparently) and then 4-6 are the HD trilogy. Finale feels a little weird unless there's a narrative i don't know about, i thought it was just 1-2 recurring characters, not even to the extent of Phil or Catalina.

[-] cerealkiller@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago

I know about the trilogy's yeah. Speaking of LCS and VCS. Fuck Rockstar for only porting the former to fucking mobile and the latter to nothing at all (because who could have guessed having Phil Collins in your game is gonna be a copyright nightmare).

I meant as in If Rockstar is going to soft reboot the GTA franchise again or is gonna keep going with the HD universe because we haven't seen Las Venturas or San Fierro yet.

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

they kinda stumbled into gta online last time and now they get to take that and whatever lessons they learned from rdr2's shitty online and make something even more exploitative. i wouldn't expect 7 until that falls off or there's some crazy new technology that justifies new shit, and i have no idea what/where the game would be.

[-] cerealkiller@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Probably unfortunately. I played GTA 5 Online on my PS3 until the shut It down a few years back. Thankfully I haven't stumbled on too much micro transactions from It. I just remember some hacker giving me a million dollars lol.

Also some people in the community are making a revival GTA 5 Online but you have to have Discord to access It which sucks. Not to mention It's in It's early stages.

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 4 points 2 days ago

that reminds me there's most of a port of VC into IV's engine out there and r* tried to shut them down so they just released the whole thing standalone instead of having to have 4 and vc yourself and building it with a script.

[-] whatdoiputhere12@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

Las venturas is what I want to see the most, but probably will have a high chance of a lack of interiors if they get to it, barring maybe one casino

but maybe we could visit these cities in 6, albeit in one mission, like with north Yankton, but who knows

[-] cerealkiller@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Same, just for Vice City and Vice City Stories lol. I just love the vibe and how VCS basically combined the gang war mechanics from San Andreas and business mechanics from OG Vice City.

It legit feels like an improvement on the original. And fuck, the music is awesome.

[-] Lussy@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Kind of does a disservice to gta and rockstar no matter how kkkapitalist they are to call gta open world slop.

But then again, im not a g*mer

[-] DefinitelyNotAPhone@hexbear.net 8 points 2 days ago

Open world slop, crime games, cop-shooting simulators, all of these have been done far better elsewhere. GTA seems to be a franchise kept alive through sheer pop culture inertia and console gamers with more disposable income than common sense who keep buying solid gold jets to fly around in the world's shittiest pseudo-MMO online.

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

cop-shooting simulators

I'm not sure if it's still true, but Payday 2 was really cool at one point in time lol

[-] Sinisterium@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago

Online RP servers of GTA are quite popular, INZOI tried to capture that demographic.

[-] Poison_Ivy@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago

No better feeling than you and a mixed group of cis women, trans ppls, and gay men all dressed in pink rushing in and beating the tar out of anyone not in pink on Vinewood Blvd

[-] salmoura@lemmy.eco.br 2 points 2 days ago

That sounds fun, actually. I'll still avoid MP like the plague.

[-] Poison_Ivy@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

It’s bc you lack a pink car and are afraid of getting beat 😎

[-] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

Rockstar is way better at open worlds than Ubisoft.

[-] 7bicycles@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago
