Why the fuck did they use AI for this? Real chess boards aren't exactly hard to come by.

yeah there's a billion stock or public domain photos of chess, or if you want to be cool you could set up the pieces in a double bongcloud and take a photo yourself.

hypothesis one: pinterest was flooded with AI art and now so is google search

hypothesis two: your boss wants you to use AI. having AI write your article and then having AI make the image makes for two uses out of the 50 in your production quotas.

hypothesis two

Jhezes fuck, this is it, isn't it? They already paid for the subscription so if it doesn't get used it's a waste of money and won't be in the budget next year.

As always, it gets weirder, the longer you look. Is the left horse black or white? Or both? Why is it cut different then the other one? Why are the pieces behind the white ones black too?

Because stock images often do charge for their use in articles like this, or at the very least require proper attribution. Using an AI is the easier and lazier way to get that done.

Also wouldn't surprise me if the boss' failson who works as the manager is convinced that they need to go "all in" on AI and demands their writers all use it as much as possible.
