Herzl believed that there were two types of Jews, Jiden (Yids) and Juden (Jews),[6][a] and considered any Jew who openly opposed his proposals for a Zionist solution to the Jewish question to be a Mauschel.

So Zionism was founded on a no true Scotsman fallacy. Can’t say I’m very surprised, but still I didn’t know this. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for this, I didn’t know that either. And then there’s this gem from Herzl regarding the origins of Mauschel:

at some dark moment in our history some inferior human material (eine niedrigere Volksmasse) got into our unfortunate people and blended with it.

It really is just racism all the way down.

Tbf, there was much less appeal to zionism until a sudden upswing throughout Europe starting in the 1930s.

Historians are still puzzled as to the cause.
