I found this great, easy guide to secure a Chevy Volt. I haven't yet tried it, but still wanted to share.

Without some serious ECM re-programming from someone that knows what they're doing (which is very unlikely), probably not. Pretty sure they're referencing OBDII protocol (or whatever the current standard is) in this context.

Having said that, it's probably only an issue when taking to the dealer for anything. Your everyday, local mechanic likely only cares about the diagnostic codes that might be active and point to the issue at hand.

yeah OBD and whatever maker-specific extensions, because lots of things only work that way

used to be! but nowadays manufacturers are upgrading their diag software with DRM, that these tools refuse to work without internet. and this has been going for years now as I know. and sometimes the mechanic needs to pull up that diag software, because the other one does not tell enough, or maybe they are just always using that because it's easier for them

Blegh, of course that's becoming the case. Confirms my choice to keep my '97 up and running as long as I can and bike everywhere possible.

Yes, but when there are recalls that need to be handled by the dealership they will get your data.

Honestly, it isn't a huge deal to me other than the fact that there's no way around it. You pay 10s of thousands of dollars for something, yet you still don't fully own it.

yet you still don't fully own it.

and it even spies on you for commercial data mining and whatever other reasons!

but what I said is not only a concern with the dealer's repair shop, see my other response to their comment
