Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

this is likely the solution for the time being. it's also what cloudflare's CEO recommended a couple weeks ago.
really interested in seeing how this changes things. i think we're already witnessing the loss of "the internet" as a place, or a refuge of sorts. as people need less and less interaction with computers in order to get the information they're looking for, they will not look back. i'm already starting to see this with friends in my life who have onboarded AI into their lives completely.
That's bleak. I want to say something positive but I can't think of anything. I think of AI like a drug that can be highly addictive and destructive for some people. And like people with substance abuse problems - they won't admit they even have a problem. What can you do?
It is incredibly bleak. A good friend I've got nearly 10 years of work history nearly unrecognizable to me today. At first I suspected substance abuse but when I had a chance to really chat, they confessed to me. It could also still be substance abuse too
It's actually been something that's forced me to shift my perspective. I don't buy the propaganda of the luddification of anti-AI folks, that we'll be like those who refused to learn computers before the turn of the millennium. I actually think the technology is useful in niche and potentially broader situations. I will however never understand why the hell everyone is so comfortable providing their training data to other people's servers FOR FREE??? Some of them even pay for the privilege! This isn't even touching the data heists being pulled off in clear daylight which should at the very least land some people in prison.
I could go on, but... these days I feel more comfortable keeping my thoughts off the Internet.
Reminder to USians to download DeepSeek before it gets banned.
It might not get banned. They might figure out a lowish cost way to bribe Trump. He gets some goodies and they get to stay in the American market.

I’m curious what they are doing instead of spending time on the internet though? is it that they simply replace the time they might have spent searching with scrolling through reels or whatever? or are they touching grass?
allegedly touching grass. realistically probably tiktok/reels.
A lot of people will crash offline. the rest will silo into forums like this one, using search engines that use old methodologies. It'll be like 1998 again.
