Great idea! Here, I'll start:

People need to understand that there is a difference between empathy and sympathy, and the former does not imply the latter. Empathy simply means understanding where a person is coming from (i.e. their motives), it does not require that you agree with them.

it does not require that you agree with them.

If only more people understood this, the world would already look so much nicer.

I'm not sure it would look nicer, but at least it'd be more honest.

It would be nicer. Religious people would understand that another religion can exist and that not everyone needs to agree with your religion or be dead.

Precisely. Like I realize that people who want my family deported or murdered are fully human and have a similar experience of physical reality as I do, but that understanding their perspective doesn't mean I agree with them, or lead me to believe I shouldn't defend myself against their intolerance.

Understanding that everyone else is also human is really just the ground floor of empathy. You can go so much further than that.

Yeah, like the certainty that if I had been subjected to identical conditions as those that brought an antagonist before me, that I would not have deviated by one atom from their path, and would find myself in the exact same shoes, clothes, skin, mind, and soul.

And we're still just talking about human minds.

Uhh, have you ever heard about this thing called free will?

The conditions alone aren’t what determines a person’s character. It’s also the choices they make along the way.

[-] mad_lentil@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yes ofc, but you're forgetting that I would have the same free will.

[-] MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago

Right, which means that when faced with the same conditions you could still potentially make different choices

[-] mad_lentil@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

No the free will is identical too

[-] MacNCheezus@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago

Then it's not free
