I read about in in 2008, or at least its being recession resistant. Googling it today seems to confirm the latter,although it's been faltering (just apparently a bit less with gen Zers)

My grandpa always said cosmetics were a wise investment because people will never not care about their appearance. He lived through the Depression and WWII. The women around him were always finding ways to "put on their war paint," as he put it.
