Having grown up in the global south, many people rely on small loans to survive, because most people don't have a steady income (work in construction or agriculture for example) and banks will not extend credit unless you're part of the top 5%.

The ones I knew didn't lend at those interest rates, but the only thing they used was the threat of not lending to you again, that was enough. Never heard of any of those kinds of lenders using violence to get the money back. Not that there aren't loan sharks, but it's a different vibe, they prey on people who desperate and have other stuff going on (drug problems, gambling debt, stuff like that), not average people.
