"falls in love", acts as if he wasnt just a sexpat there

moves to philipines with 'wife', house gets broken into at night by 3 guys with guns

runs away, cowardishly abandoning his 'wife'. gets shot by the men, taken on a boat 'possibly for ransom'

dies on the boat, captors toss him overboard like he's nothing

at the very end, narrator casually reveals this white guy has been making his money by lending money to locals at a 20% interest rate

Lol, half my kitchen is phillipino and the mist right wing guy in the group advised the chef to go there and take advantage of the currency difference for retirement. I said basically this and the chef remained neutral but said he didn't wanna be shot. One of the homies is getting deported at the end of the month he was imprisoned under Duetertw, works hard and pays taxes, Canada was fucking lucky to have him. Fuck this fake ass country

Having grown up in the global south, many people rely on small loans to survive, because most people don't have a steady income (work in construction or agriculture for example) and banks will not extend credit unless you're part of the top 5%.

The ones I knew didn't lend at those interest rates, but the only thing they used was the threat of not lending to you again, that was enough. Never heard of any of those kinds of lenders using violence to get the money back. Not that there aren't loan sharks, but it's a different vibe, they prey on people who desperate and have other stuff going on (drug problems, gambling debt, stuff like that), not average people.
