mo-beel. it's kind of a cliche at this point and probably happens less now, but it could be like a shibboleth for national (re: not southern) news anchors assuming it's like mobile phone or mobil oil, instead of a french-creole take on something like Mabila/Mavila, itself an exonym, trade-language & name of a walled town of the indigenous peoples DeSoto fought with.

probably many would. there's a lot of smaller cities all over the US that have counter-intuitive pronounciations and the only way to know them is to be taught. as a weirdo, i like learning them.

im just bummed someone on the Kopmala team had the knowledge and foresight to feed it to her. it would have been hysterical to blow the line like she has ever given half a dry fuck about the gulf coast.
