I would have totally expected the downward gradient from head to foot, but I can't grasp that little bump at the lower leg. Any thoughts on why that is there?

they also do a lot of work, try raising yourself onto your toes a bunch of times in a row, your calves will glow like the top element in the oven.

Calf is a big muscle with good blood supply, is my educated guess
