It is not. Its a separate game, with its own engine and unique content. It's just inspired in part, by Minecraft.

"in part" lol

I know I know, it can be more than that. It's just hilarious when a grandma wouldn't realize they're different games at a glance.

[-] bizzle@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago

Could a grandma tell the difference between Battlefield and CoD? Probably not 🤔

[-] MotoAsh@piefed.social -3 points 5 days ago

Which versions? Some of them cover the same stuff and do look very similar if you don't know what UI or game features to differentiate.

This is literally about someone who doesn't know the things the expert knows... I'm saying the non-expert would be confused. Literally the opposite of that comic.

I think they are implying that no matter which shooter it is, most grandmother's will have absolutely no clue at all. And, that would imply your mentioning the UI is wildly redundant or misguided because any analysis beyond "shooter" is waaaay out of Grandmas depth.

The XKCD just uses an example of people talking about details that are obviously nonsensical to anyone outside the "in group" (molecular sand lattice science people types).

You with your game knowledge, fall into the "in group" in this instance and the additional details are superfluous.

Don't think it was a dig at you, just a noticed behaviour. We all do it, especially with topics that we are interested in.

I specifically said they WOULDN'T recognize those things.

I mentioned them because they WOULDN'T recognize it.

This is actually cool! So it's made by the devs of Hypixel, which is no doubt one of the most popular mass-multiplayer Minecraft servers, and it's their own block-based game! While it isn't Minecraft, it's similar enough that modders can convert Minecraft builds to Hytale, and there seems to be a translation compatibility layer built between the two games' structures..

[-] Midnitte@beehaw.org 9 points 5 days ago

It's certainly inspired by it, but its a separate $20

[-] fascicle@leminal.space 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Oh dang, I got an email from a Minecraft server host about it and kind of put it in the back of my mind that it would be cool to run a server. I was thinking it was a mod pack with something to do with hypixel

[-] Midnitte@beehaw.org 2 points 4 days ago

It's effectively Minecraft 2.0 by Hypixel - they wanted something with modding more baked in (for example, enemies are able to be scripted).
