I always knew the Liberal academia was white-centric but this level of ignorance is astounding!
It’s a matter of congruence with other ~~radicalized~~ racialized (damn autocorrect) groups. There is a social reality to the flattening of different cultures under a single banner, whether it reads “Latino” or something else. I would ask what alternative you are proposing? ICE doesn’t give a shit about the difference between a Venezuelan and a Mexican. They will throw both people into the same van. That’s the common struggle of this large population, and a name is necessary to talk about that reality.
And they don’t care how “white” Latinos are either, you could be 100% Spanish, descended fully from colonizers, but if you’re in the US and your last name is Martinez you’re going in the van.
Which is why it’s fucking embarrassing that these kapos exist, on top of being immoral it’s not going to work, you’re never going to be “one of the good ones,” that’s not how this goes, it’s never how it’s gone.
