In their eyes, consumers are, in fact, distinct from the US economy; in their eyes, the US economy is the stock market.
Imagine having dehumanized workers to the point that all you see them as is statistics for shareholders to squeeze. This kind of idealism leads to miscalculations and unexpected consequences.
