I think people use compartmentalisation to avoid thinking about the consequences when they eat. I bet if you went to a slaughterhouse and saw the death, and if you read the science on the effect they have on local communities

A study looked at a series of small towns in pairs. One where a slaughterhouse opened, one where it didn't. The towns with slaughterhouses saw increased alcoholism, mental health issues, spousal abuse.... Taking lives all day long, it damages your soul. You have to become a worse person in order to survive that. A crueler person. It hurts your ability to treat other humans with kindness and respect., and you remembered all of that every single time you ate meat for a month, by the end of that month you'd want to go vegetarian.
