That's not going to be the key to forgiveness buddy. You don't get one at all in fact.

[-] sundray@lemmus.org 3 points 2 weeks ago

He said he's sorry, and I'm sure all Trump's concentration camp victims will be glad to hear it!

[-] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 2 points 2 weeks ago

No, I disagree. People can do horrible things, but forgiveness is our humanity. If they truly are sorry, I will forgive them. If they recognize the damage they did, and how their views hurt other people, I will forgive them.

They can't earn forgiveness by just asking for it, they need to back up their words with action. This guy is directly responsible for thousands if not millions of displaced and/or lost lives. Go ahead buddy, we're watching

E: grammar

You can't earn it if people already decided you can't earn it. Don't forgive them now, obviously, but saying they cannot earn it is how you create desperation in people that pushes them towards another extreme.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, it'll take sincere sustained effort, but come, help fix the problem. He can talk to his neighbors and people in his life about this. The damage can't be undone, but I'd rather less suffering than getting to be smug

What do we want? Him to sell his house and give the money to the local food bank? Or maybe injure himself, or attack some elected MAGAt? What’s the going price?

I’d approve any of the above but honest world-view changing is kind of hard to see sometimes. I assume money and action are involved.

[-] Soulg@ani.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

Frankly at this point I just want these people to start voting Democrat. Not because they're particularly good but because that would clearly demonstrate that they understand how wrong they were

[-] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 1 points 2 weeks ago

He’s a Hawaiian, no?
Isn't there a billionaire that stole reserved land for himself that he can show solidarity for?

It's one thing to be able to introspect.
It’s another to reflect, and take actions directly opposing the Nazis.

When an alcoholic sets about seeking forgiveness, they're supposed to go around to the people they've wronged and apologize. They're also supposed to recognize that they make poor alcohol choices and need to give it up.

Maybe the MAGA people could recognize that they make poor political choices and give up their voting and their activism.

Like, I try to think how I would react if I made a choice so monumentally bad that thousands of people died, people were tortured, or an entire national economy thrown into disarray. There's no reparation I could pay to compensate; no sacrifice I could make to balance the scale. That's kind of the point of forgiveness: the wounded party has not been made whole, maybe can not be made whole, but accepts that trying to wring compensation out of the offender will only make another injured party. But there's still the question of how to keep the offender from doing it again.

It would be great if they removed their hateful and destructive beliefs from our society as they have no place here.

Which could mean any number of things in practice.

[-] db2@lemmy.world -1 points 2 weeks ago

but forgiveness is our humanity

You're talking about people who absolutely not only do not see it that way but will actively use that against you as a weakness. This shit is leftover because of "forgiveness" that started after the civil war wasn't punished enough and several times after including but by no means limited to actual literal Nazis.

No. No forgiveness. That wishy washy shit got us in this mess.

[-] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 2 points 2 weeks ago

That's why I included that they need to realize it.

[-] db2@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

The only thing I could respect is twofold, first that they realize it to the point they understand they shouldn't be making decisions more important than what they want for breakfast, second is that they work diligently for the rest of their traitorous miserable livres to atone for actual deaths their stupidity directly caused.

Nothing short of that is sufficient to even suffer their presence. Enough is enough.

[-] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

The most dangerous enemy is the one with nowhere to retreat.

[-] db2@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah. That's us now. They don't get to be the aggressor for decades and then cry victim when we've had enough of their bullshit.

[-] timbuck2themoon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yep. And given how society is, you'd be stupid not to take one that has seen the light and changed their vote or actually started voting.

Sadly we don't have the luxury of casting out everyone we deem unfit.
