I'm sure there are hot sauces out there that are just as hot. Is it the products fault or the social media platforms that are hosting these stupid challenges? I remember some stupid ones, like kids setting themselves on fire with rubbing alcohol. Did Paqui marketing staff start the challenge?

[-] brain_in_a_box@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago

The product has the challenge on its packaging.

I mean, they designed the chip as a thing to be eaten. It doesn't appear that the marketing made the child eat it in a way that was different from anyone else.

[-] ProxyTheAwesome@hexbear.net 1 points 1 year ago

The chip has a warning label that it’s not intended for children, pregnant people, people with underlying health conditions. Really kind of hard to blame the company here unless they were pushing the challenge or marketing to kids

Still seems kind of thin to me, especially considering teens' proclivities to test boundaries and try to emulate adults. I hope you're not saying this is the kid's fault.

I think it’s just a senseless tragedy. Do you want to ban alcohol too because teens want to drink?

[-] rjs001@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 1 year ago

I think there’s a far far stronger argument to ban alcohol than hot chips

[-] ProxyTheAwesome@hexbear.net 6 points 1 year ago

Damn didn’t know we were doing prohibition up in here, went so well last time

[-] rjs001@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah, it actually did help the world and the people a lot during the Prohibition period. Alcohol related health issues went significantly down and so did hospital visits for liver related issues. The problem was that enforcement wasn’t tough enough so that people still got away with it

[-] ProxyTheAwesome@hexbear.net 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Organized crime took over all major cities, the government started poisoning alcohol and people were drinking unregulated bathtub booze and ethanol and becoming blind at extreme rates. Completely off. The enforcement was so tough they were mass poisoning thousands of speakeasy goers.

There’s a reason no AES nation has banned alcohol but the fascist settler states all had a go

[-] rjs001@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 year ago

The issue was i’ll running of prohibition. Had better steps taken to ensure alcohol was removed (like slowly limiting it over time) then those issues may not have been as prevalent. The issue with organized crime may also have had to do with certain economic woes at the time

[-] ProxyTheAwesome@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago

this time we'll be good and only poison hundreds of people instead of thousands! please pay no attention to the alcohol cartels seizing total power, surely has nothing to do with giving them 100% of the market and artificially suppressing supply to ensure their superprofits

[-] cryptymythy@hexbear.net 3 points 1 year ago

not to mention how incredibly easy alcohol is to make

[-] rjs001@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 year ago

How is what you are saying a different argument than saying that socialism doesn’t work because the USSR collapsed

[-] ProxyTheAwesome@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago

i don't see how that's relevant or related at all

[-] rjs001@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Because it’s the same fundamental logic

[-] ProxyTheAwesome@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Communism is when we ban alcohol? What does implementing a new economic system have to do with banning alcohol, can you spell it out in more detail?

Communism has historically eradicated organized crime, Cuba has the lowest crime in all of latin america and basically no organized crime. How are you drawing that together with a half-baked idealist movement that resulted in unintended backlash and handing more power to cartels?

[-] rjs001@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

If something is a bad idea because it (some would argue) failed or collapsed once then wouldn’t that be an argument agaisnt socialism?

[-] ProxyTheAwesome@hexbear.net 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Prohibition can only fail because it's extremely easy to make your own booze in a bathtub. It's functionally impossible to actually ban it.

That's different than a new economic system being temporarily suppressed by the existing system before contradiction cause it to rear up again. Capitalism failed hundreds of times to defeat Feudalism, until it didn't. Prohibition isn't the necessary resolution of the contradictions of capitalism coming to a head, it's a specific policy. Socialism cannot be defeated until humanity goes extinct, as the contradictions of capitalism will keep pushing socialism back onto the world stage over and over until it wins eventually. There's no dialectical world historical process pushing forward prohibition in this way

unless they were pushing the challenge or marketing to kids

The "challenge" part of it is clearly marketed at kids (it's not exclusively kids who do viral challenges like this, but it's predominantly kids).
