Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Nobody said biden is good. Hes the better option. The other two options are an old dried up french fry whos going to jail and a psychopath. American politics is fucked and it was always fucked because its designed that way.
In what way? The wall is going up, the kids are still in cages, COVID runs rampant, the economy is in the shitter and getting worse, LGBT/women's rights are under assault and getting worse, oil drilling leases are being signed away like nothing, Ukraine is being drip-fed weapons to prolong the war without end, Sinophobia is national policy in all but name, and federal police funding is at an all-time high. If Trump had won in 2020, what would be worse or even different?
Biden is the harm reduction candidate because he didn't make my tummy upset on Xwitter the way that dang cheeto does 😡🤬
Pretty much. Dipshit hasn't and will never respond of course; I wonder if this was just bait to get some screengrabs and crawl back out into the wider lemmyverse
From what i see and hear it slows down the enshitification but doesnt prevent it. Im far too unwise to solve a problem on the other side of the world. My best solution would be protesting if i lived in the usa. Gather your local community and try to make small changes at first and if everyone makes small changes thats a big change.
The only difference since Biden took office is that liberals are telling protestors to stop protesting the same things that happened under Trump because now the protests are highlighting the fact liberals didn't change anything and making them look bad.
At least when a republican is president liberals pretend to care about minorities, when there's a dem president those same criticisms from those same minorities are just handwoven away as Russian disinformatsia.
When-the-north-has-a-problem.quote
Protestesting national foreign policy? With media blackouts and a militarized police and border force? From a barely nascent left that can barely fathom the plight of immigration against a far right that craves for the suffering of "illegals" . Ya, no.
Any day now right? Surely there's no way he wriggles his way out of this one!
*wriggles out of this one easily*
Ah well, nevertheless.
He will get house arrest atleast right?
My bet is nothing substantial will happen on the criminal front until the election, and after that good fucking luck if he wins lol
He'll be confined to his luxury golf resort
He'll get house arrest at any of his properties plus he can leave for anything he defines as campaigning which will be literally everything.
More realistically literally nothing will happen to him but that's best case scenario.
Lins are already laying the groundwork of "you can't charge him or hold him in contempt of anything because then he'll use it as evidence the system discriminated against him so the smart move is to keep letting him get away with everything so he can't claim victimhood.
That would be great if dem supporters actually criticized this policy (and engaged politically outside of the kiddy pool of republican-democrat electoralism), but the majority don't seem to think it is an issue. Many believe that Biden shouldn't be criticized at all because it helps trump. Cough Cough.
If american politics is fubar then it's fubar and we should be done with the facade of the "better option" and strive to redesign it rather than acquiesce to the horror.
Biden already looks bad. The only way to make a politician do what you want is to criticize them. Always supporting someone because they wear the same colours as you is idiotic so yesh i agree with you. Idk how you would change american politics. Its like changing the rules of a game that youre trapped in. Maybe a civil war would be a good thing in the end but idk.
Yup, theyre all so thin skinned we managed to prevent wars based on lies and get universal healthcare by calling Bush gay.
Who opened the fucking lib gate.
Literally all democrats did for the last 10 years has been criticize right wing politicians how's that worked out.
The fucking Jan 6th hogs had a better understanding of how material conditions affect politics they just made the mistake of overestimating their popular support.
If you honestly think the only way to influence politicians is "criticism" youre already a neutered counter revolutionary.
Well, not the only way
Ok, let's build that wall! Let's get the Mexicans out, America first! Or we could not do that
https://www.cnbc.com/2023/10/05/white-house-waives-26-laws-for-us-mexico-border-wall-construction.html
What exactly is your plan for "not doing that" because electing liberals explicitly failed to allow us to "not do that" in the last 12 hours.
We're building new walls and installing razor wire in rivers to flay immigrants children. The camps still exist, how exactly has electing Biden helped this situation.
At least when Trump built the wall it was a grift to his dumbshit contractor buddies and the wall blew over in 6 months and had gaps so big they tried to plug them with shipping containers. Thank God we've got the mature pragmatic dems in charge to make sure the wall gets built correctly now.
I am saying biden is like trump wrt wall building. This is not praise for democrats
Then we should continue to point out when he does bad things, no? I'm genuinely curious what your point is here? Should we not be concerned when "the lesser evil" does something bad? I don't see what the value is in saying "Trump is worse" here. Trump isn't president, Biden is.
I interpreted the title as op saying biden and trump are equally as bad which isnt true in my opinion. My solution would be to fucking wreak shit and replace the system in murica but we all know that wont happen. I think even one change like a ranking based voting system could change things big time. No more two party system because you can safely vote for your actual party of choice. Still as an european im not planning on solving america by proxy lol. Here in europe we have our own shit to deal with.
The largest protest in American history happened under Trump.
Just something to think about.
And accomplished absolutely nothing and everybody was back in their cars 10 minutes after the end of the officially sanctioned protesting hours.
Liberal protests are by definition useless because if you were doing anything that could effect change liberals would be condemning it.
It accomplished nothing after being captured by Democrats and channeled into electoral politics. People thought they could vote to defund the police.
Democrats promising harm reduction convinced them to go home and stay home.
Oh figured you were talking about the women's March which I thought was advertised as the largest at the time just based on numbers.
That too didn't really go great looking at where things are now compared to then.
