I thought that's just the format. An Onion-style joke is a headline with an optional article that riffs on the concept a little.
I've not watched SNL, but what you're describing reminds me of "misses" from other US skit shows like portlandia or key and peele.
Pretty much every good SNL skit stops being funny halfway through, with few exceptions.
