Sega took that as a challenge

[-] JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 29 points 8 months ago

Is that the suicide rollercoaster?

I never understood why they would make the people, who had to ride this, start at the bottom. Just make the start at the top so they don't have the most agonising roller coaster ascending of their lives. wth

[-] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 10 points 8 months ago

I read that it would give the riders time to think things over, in case they realized they didn't want to die. The coaster would allow for those who change their mind to get off and descend once reaching the top of the hill, I think there was supposed to be a button riders could hit to signal the operator.

[-] FreshLight@sh.itjust.works 6 points 8 months ago

Wait... People would ride this WILLINGLY?! lmao

[-] idiomaddict@feddit.de 9 points 8 months ago

It was for euthanasia

[-] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 8 points 8 months ago

Yeah, that's kinda the point. It's a euthanasia coaster for those who want to die painlessly while having the ride of their lives.

[-] Klear@sh.itjust.works 5 points 8 months ago

It was never meant to be built. It was a thought experiment. You shouting here shows the thought affected you in some way - that was one of the points of the idea.

But no, nobody ever expected this thing to be ever built, much less for anyone to ride it.

[-] problematicPanther@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

That's the point

[-] button_masher@lemmy.ml 7 points 8 months ago

Huh. Never thought about it that way..

But. They have to get up somehow. So even if it was an elevator or escalator, it would still be their final ascension and potentially nerve wracking.

Can only think one way out of this... Maybe if the participant was anesthesia'd. Then one is suddenly awakened on top of this rollercoaster of doom, slowly watching the end come near. Each loop, closer to death. (That's how I feel most days 🙃)

Why have you all heard of this

[-] Shareni@programming.dev 10 points 8 months ago

Internet is strange place

[-] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 3 points 8 months ago

Wikipedia rabbit holes are a hell of a drug.

[-] grubberfly@mander.xyz 1 points 8 months ago

The™ best™ question™, and applicable to pretty much all topics, too!

[-] DivineDev@kbin.run 11 points 8 months ago

It's the Weierstrass function, a function that is continuous but not differentiable anywhere.

[-] knolord@lemmy.world 16 points 8 months ago

OPs function is indeed the Weierstrass function, but the "rollercoaster" here isn't a function at all, since there are multiple values per element, isn't it?

[-] DivineDev@kbin.run 1 points 8 months ago

Ah my bad, I did not see the comment had a picture attached. There's probably a mathematical way to derive the shape of the euthanasia coaster as well, but I don't know.

[-] grubberfly@mander.xyz 1 points 8 months ago

maybe it'd be better modeled by a 3d spiral? I'll hit up Desmos if I remember my polar coordinates right.

[-] ramble81@lemm.ee 10 points 8 months ago

I think the original comic had the suicide coaster in the bottom panel.
