For real. What is up with Western media refering to a fusion reactor as an "artificial sun" when the Chinese do it?

[-] SpiderFarmer@hexbear.net 34 points 5 months ago

It sounds cool as hell, which I don't think was the intention Western media had.

It sounds extremely cool. Reminds me of how Liu Cixin describes the spaceships in the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy.

Doc Ock also called his reactor an artificial sun so I guess it's to invoke a negative emotion although it just makes it sound even cooler.

yeah it's to make it sound kinda scary & reckless.

Yeah, got to make sure people don't start thinking a clean and powerful energy generation is a good thing. Especially when the State Department designated enemy is doing better than the US at developing it

It’s not just western media. Official chinese media call it an artificial sun too. I suppose for chinese people, it’s just a cool sensationalized headline, but for westerners it’s scary sci-fi mr. Burns shit

They know their readers have no idea what the name refers to and probably are just reading the headline + first paragraph if anything past that.

Western reactors are called that too by the media I thought
