I first saw a photo of Fountain when I was high school. My first thought was "That's stupid and the artist is lazy! 'R. Mutt'? What the fuck is that shit!" But starting about a couple days later I began to realize how cool it actually was.

The joke was on the Society of Independent Artists, they were obligated to accept and exhibit the piece regardless of the fact that "it isn't real art," but paradoxically that fact makes it art.
