The biggest upside to a truck is that the bed is outside. It's perfect for wet, stinky, unsanitary, powdery/sandy, etc can cause huge headaches in a van or hatchback, and doesn't require you to pull a trailer which can be a real pain in the ass sometimes. It's like the multitool of vehicles: bulky, not the best for any given job, but capable of doing almost anything.
