They'd come up with dodgy and dangerous schemes that would probably just cause more damage. And that would just be before they found a way to monetize it all...

Yep: Easiest place to capture carbon is probably inside a coal power plant chimney, so the winner would be the one who invested in the most coal power plants and put a little sponge or something on the end of the chimney to capture ~0.1% of the carbon emissions...
