Metal Gear Solid recommendations?

So the only Metal Gear game I've ever actually played was the 1998 Metal Gear Solid for the PS1 when I was a kid. I've not played a single other game in the series since.
Which ones would you recommend? Would it be better to play them in chronological order to get the full overarching story, or do they work ok independent of one another?
Now that you mentioned it, someone just gave me a free xbox so imma finally play Metal Gear Rising. Never played any of the solid games so hope I ain’t too confused

There's some things that might go over your head, but they're not really story important, just insight into the world of Metal Gear and the character of Raiden. There's also some fan-service, like another characters outfit and sword being unlockable.
