“I am actually kind of blown away by how advanced this system is, particularly compared to the backward nature of the U.S., so I am completely impressed,” Jodi Dean, a professor and political scientist, said.

Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Twitter, retweeted a call from far-right Argentinian politician Javier Milei to the Venezuelan military to stage a coup against Maduro.

Nothing says anti-statist small government like federal authorities seizing control.

Under Hugo Chavez, Venezuela nationalized its vast oil industry and used the profits to fund massive social welfare programs, including free healthcare, education and housing.

This isn’t true; the oil industry was nationalized in the 70’s, Chavez just redirected more of the profits of it towards the lower classes.

Chavez did seize some property owned by foreign companies. But he paid them what their tax reports claimed it was worth, and they were pissed.

That's somehow cooler than just seizing the assets without compensation.

I know, it rocks, they basically owned themselves.

Guatemala did this with united fruit in the 50s, which IIRC is what precipitated the US couping them in 54.

Luckily Venezuela in 2024 seems harder to coup.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the Venezuelan military virtually a) purged of pro americans, and b) fucking hate the opposition for wanting them to die in an american invasion?

Shocking that an ”anarcho”-capitalist who sends cops to brutalize people would be in favor of this surprised-pika
