Maybe I'm wrong, but I unironically can't think of a time when it's wholesome to fly the English flag.
I often forget that England has its own flag.
I think it's kind of neat how the Union Jack is composed of its member states' flags layered on top of each other. Of course,

The USSR should have done something like that, or not, I honestly don’t like flags.
It's a little more difficult when you have 21 states. The USSR did a theme in the other direction. They took the USSR flag and added stuff to it to make the individual member states flags.

I like the simplicity of the hammer, sickle, and star on red.
I love that technically it's a red star on a red background. The yellow star shape is the outline of the red star.
