Not sure if true, but someone raised an issue when this was first announced. That you can no longer refuse to unlock your phone when stopped, since you'll have to unlock it to show your digital driver's license.

Caveat: Californians who add a driver's license to their Apple or Google wallets must still carry their physical ID card as required by law.

What’s the point, then? I thought the reason for a digital ID was so you didn’t always need the physical one with you.

It’s so people can trial having digital IDs. Some TSA and others can scan the new IDs, but not everyone can. So in the meantime, you have to carry your physical one too.

People are pointing out potential negatives, but this has some good possibilities for privacy too. If you show your ID at the liquor store, there’s no need for the clerk to know your name or address. The scanner can just verify your age.

I suppose it could be used to streamline ID verification for online purchases? I vape, and whenever I order supplies online I have to go through an ID verification process, usually involving uploading a photo of my driver's license to some system. If they had a way to tokenize this step, that would make the ordering process a lot simpler.

Could also perhaps be used for something like carding at a bar; just a quick tap on their tablet and they don't have to sit there looking for watermarks and stuff if you look too young to be there.

I have never had to do this to purchase anything online!

It's so those companies can connect your profile to your driving record.

Politicians in Texas would love this. They want you to verify your identity to view certain sites.
