you're at your job where you want to build a union and your coworker asks you "did you catch the game last night?" what is your reply

"oh okay" (proceeds to not attempt to start further conversations with you)

[-] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago

I mean, that would be an extremely maladjusted behavior on the coworker's part. It's not like I write off the possibility of befriending or even talking to someone because they don't consume my slop.

If the price of building socialism is having to pretend to like sports for the rest of my life then I'll just have to resign myself to capitalist hellworld

[-] hypercracker@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

nah come over and watch the fights with me some day we'll have a great time

[-] FuckyWucky@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

yea ill let others handle the talking. i rarely talk irl anyways.

[-] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

You've actually just pointed out one of the worst things about sports in the US

[-] hypercracker@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

a lot of people are more socially inept than you think and don't have many conversation starters

[-] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

THE GAME being the patriarchy approved "normal" topic that ALL MALES MUST be able to have a conversation about in order to be socially acceptable is toxic as fuck. The way your turning it around to say poor smol bean hegemonic culture enjoyers don't know what else to talk about is kind of true, but that doesn't make it any better. If anything its another example of how patriarchy hurts men as much as women.

Just to be clear, the problem isn't sports but patriarchy. This may be less of an issue outside the US. Hopefully its not as bad in the US as was, but i doubt it

What is the way out of your conundrum? How can people talk about sports?

[-] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

People do talk about sports - and that's fine! I don't hate sports or have a problem with people watching sports or talking about sports.

I've been pretty clear about what i have a problem with. It's when someone says "i don't watch sports" and that's a problem because it isnt considered the approved and acceptable answer to that question

[-] hypercracker@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

"I don't watch sports" means you view not watching sports as part of your identity. The person you're talking to clearly enjoys sports, and you're stating that some core aspect of the way you think of yourself is just against sharing that with them. Generally when I talk to people I stay open to their hobbies even if I'm not into those hobbies at that time.

Absolute bonkers take coming from a 1 month old account is pinging my wrecker radar

[-] hypercracker@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

I've been here since the "do you want to fuck the bunny cop" days but anyway there are other ways to say that, like "I haven't gotten into that sport yet, what's the deal" or literally any other phrase that doesn't murder the conversation on the spot

[-] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

I've tried many times pretending to be something I'm not to get others to accept me, and it has never led anywhere good. It just makes me feel like an infiltrator while being miserable and hating myself. This is a lesson I have spend half of my life learning the hard way.

[-] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago

maybe if they did something besides watch sports.

[-] hypercracker@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

sorry that prole hobbies aren't interesting enough for you

[-] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago

Smart play "No, I missed it, who won?"

[-] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

Yeah, i have been around people who like sports all my life and this is the go-to. Let's them talk about the game, and gets me up to speed of a game I honestly don't really care about, but that it's nice that gets people excited about.

[-] T34_69@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago

Never been asked that by a co-worker
