Do you mean that you can't imagine how he actually drove it into the swimming pool unless alcohol or something else occurred? Because falling over a 5-10 foot ledge and having the mower land on you would easily cause significant injuries.
As for why it was driven into the pool: Could be something as simple as being distracted, eg., using his phone while mowing.
It was a why. And I guess he could have been on his phone right by the pool while mowing too. I don't think any sort of safe behavior was involved considering if it was some sort of mechanical failure, you can easily jump off of a riding mower before it falls into a pool and maybe skin your knee.
I'm just trying to figure out how this would have happened if it wasn't either irresponsibility or a medical issue. I concede that there could be other options.
I (distantly) knew someone who was cutting grass on an incline adjacent to a pond. The lawnmower flipped, and it pinned him in the pond. He drowned in a foot of water and was sober.
People misjudge things all the time. I would guess it was a combination of distraction and/or non-ideal terrain (slope, dropoff, or combination).
Id argue its hard to jump off anything when youre old as him.
