The E.T. moment is overhyped and a US phenomenon. It never happened in Europe or Japan, for example. Everybody seems to think that the video game crash of 1983 nearly killed the video game industry and that the NES was responsible for reviving it while Europe had a vibrant home computer scene on their Commodores, BBC Micros, Sinclairs and others with games that were better than everything on the 2600.

So what you might see is a crash in certain segments of the market and that happens quite often: There is nobody really releasing new MMORPGs anymore. Single Player FPS have crashed hard and now see a small revival by indie devs. For a while nobody did classic Point'n'Click adventures.

Do you want a prediction? The current cost of graphic cards will crash the classic PC gaming market. There are some enthusiasts who are buying cards for thousands of dollars or building 4.000€ computers. But the majority of gamers will stay on their laptops or might go for cheaper devices like the SteamDeck. But if your game needs more power, needs a modern graphic card and a beefier PC, there are fewer and fewer people who can run it and many people can't afford it. So devs will target lower system specs with to reach the bigger audience

They are raging against diversity, but this is a great example why you want to have not only white males in your workforce

Isn't it totally obvious what the comic is critiquing? There are too many people out there who vote for racist parties that want to eliminate people in their social circle and that are totally butthurt when they get called out for that and are bitter when those people don't want to have anything to do with them afterwards. "It's just politics"

The correct tools are those small plastic containers or a cheap grease gun. You can get the grease better into the bearing with them and don't have the risk of smearing cotton fiber in there. They are of course more expensive than a q-tip, but you can get one for unter 5€. Seriously, if you do this even a couple times a year, buy one.

(This is also a great example why environmental regulation is so tricky: It totally makes sense to prevent one of the worst polluting product to be phased out or replaced with a better solution. But then there are edge cases (how many people have even greased a bearing in their life?) where the new product might be worse, but that still is not an argument for mass pollution on our beaches or against that regulation)

Come on, let's not doubt that eating car tires is unhealthy.

You're right - it's great to be able to crosspost, but every fediverse software is totally allowed their own features and if other systems don't display it correctly, that's also ok.

But in this case, Mastodon really is missing some kind of "group" feature. We kind of have this with the a.gup.pe - Tool, but it would be nice to bring some order into that chaos.

So, what would be the best way to "block the internet" on an Android phone while still being somehow able to use it for communication with the family & friends, navigation and stuff like that?

I mean, algorithms are not bad at all if they are transparent. The "scaled" sorting in Lemmy is an algorithm and it does work great. You can take a look at the source code and see how it works. The problem here is not "algorithms" and we really shouldn't call it "algorithms" - it's tech companies force feeding you content they want you to see and preventing you from seeing the sites/posts/users you are actively following from reaching your feed. What Musk is doing on X is propaganda and we should call it that

If they gave more time than just a few months, in example at least an entire year, then people could at least download those files before hand. Not sure how long this would take and how stressful this would be for their servers.

They could also give the option to pay for this. They should know what storing a video costs and therefore could give creators the chance to cover that cost.

Peertube won't cut it. Those people in the article have thousands of hours of videostreams there. If you're streaming at 1080p, that will be around 1.5GB of storage per hour. 4k will be worse. So if you have 5000 hours of videos like the one guy in the article, that is a neat 7500GB or 7.5TB of video. There is no instance around that will allow you to save that amount of videos.

So hosting your own instance would be the only way. Looking at Hetzner storage box, 10TB of data will cost you 25€/month or 300€/years. That is money, but should be possible to pay out of your own pocket.

You should at least play around with the export options and do regular exports. You really don't want your diary of over 5 years to be stuck in an unmaintained app. And since this seems to be supporting exporting into markdown - maybe try an export and checkout logseq or Obsidian?

  • a $2000 bed
  • with a $19/month subscription
  • which is a full linux computer
  • full of security holes
  • that allows the company to ssh into your bed
  • that totally could give those guys access into your local network
  • the CEO is flirting with DOGE and is offering them free beds
  • they are tracking your sleep data and tweeting about it

WTF?
